This financial year represented a startup phase for Wild Oak CIC as we began developing The Wellspring, our initiative to provide accessible mental health support for men in South Devon. Core Activities: During this foundational period, we focused on establishing the framework and initial delivery of services that address a critical gap in men's mental health support in rural Devon. Our work recognises that men often struggle to reach out for help due to conditioning around vulnerability and self-reliance, and that isolation, stigma, and limited access to services create particular vulnerability in rural communities. Activities delivered during this year included: - Men's Movie Club: Regular screenings providing accessible, low-barrier entry points for men to connect with peers in a relaxed environment. These events create natural opportunities for informal support and relationship-building, addressing social isolation while reducing stigma around seeking help. - Low-Cost Counselling Service: Launched our accessible counselling offering, breaking down financial barriers that prevent many men from accessing professional mental health support. - Programme Development: Extensive planning and relationship development for The Wellspring's co-mentoring model, which will combine peer support, nature-based therapy, and professional guidance to create sustainable community-led mental health support. Community Benefit: During this startup year, we benefited the community by: 1. Creating Access Points: The Men's Movie Club provided immediate benefit by offering men a welcoming, stigma-free environment to connect with others, reducing isolation and building community connections. 2. Removing Financial Barriers: Our low-cost counselling service made professional mental health support accessible to men who would otherwise be unable to afford it. 3. Building Foundation for Sustainable Support: Our planning work established relationships with local organisations including Moor Imagination Centre, Dartmoor Wellbeing, Druid Woods, and Pondfield, and secured clinical supervision arrangements with Alistair Mayor and Stephen Richards. This groundwork ensures our future co-mentoring programmes will be professionally supported and integrated into the local support ecosystem.
