COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Company activities and impact

Decolonise Fest is an annual London-based, non-profit DIY arts and culture festival collectively organised by and for people of colour in the punk scene. Our collective is made up of activists, militant community organisers, musicians, and artists that came together to hold our first festival in 2017. Decolonise Fest centres the experiences of people of colour, who we define this as people who are descended (through one or both parents) from the original inhabitants of Africa, Caribbean, Asia, Middle East, Latin America, Australasia, North America, and the islands of the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Ocean, and of Romany Gypsy or Traveller or Traveller heritage. This year we held our festival at Signature Brew Haggerston and welcomed artists from across the UK, including Tripsun, Grunt, Lilith Ai, Currls, and more. We also continued our successful Regional Artist Development tour and hosted a gig in Birmingham featuring the artists Blue Ruth, Layla Tutt, and Big Joanie. We were also collaborated with Supersonic festival in Birmingham again this year and hosted a zine making workshop. These activities have helped us become better organisers and benefited our community as there has not been a space for people of colour in the punk scene for a long time. It also benefited the artists who participated as it gave them a platform to reach a wider audience.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are its attendees, the musicians that play the event, the speakers and members of the public who offer their services at the event, and the local music community. The directors and members of Decolonise C.I.C. have been part of the local music community collectively for over a decade and have based the outlook and values of the festival on our experiences with our local community. We sent out a survey to our attendees and bands who responded and said they enjoyed the atmosphere of the festival the most and our selection of bands. They also said next time they would like more events outside of London, and recommended investing in a venue with more space and better resources.
