Company activities and impact

BROOKWAY COMMUNITY BIODIVERSITY PROJECT CIC–ANNUAL REPORT 2024-25. The original biodiversity project along Right of Way Pathway number 13 at the end of Brookfield Crescent, continues to mature and develop and attract a wide range of insects and birds. The fruit trees planted in January 2022 are maturing and less watering is required so showing that a project like this can be sustainable and have low cost maintenance. Following on grants from the Environment Agency, the BWCBP CIC was able to plan to complete the River Restoration and Flood Alleviation Project on Lindsay Drive Roundabout in Kenton, HA3. This took place in April 2025 and the work undertaken included regrading the right-hand bank of the river known as the Wealdstone Brook as it flows through the centre of this roundabout. Over 20 tons of gravel graded stones were placed on the base of this bank and this will help to stabilise the aquatic, semi-aquatic and marginal plants which will now be established following a successful bid for planting from the Empower River Restoration Fund available through Thames 21. Work continued on with the establishment and maintenance of the Biodiversity Pollinator Garden in Woodcock Park in Kenton and a substantial increase in the numbers of pollinators has been noted and recorded. The sapling flowering fruit trees planted 3 years ago are now well established as is the Medlar Tree. The Pyracantha hedging was in full bloom this spring and is maturing nicely. The meadow area in the front was late developing due to a very dry spring. Support for two school biodiversity projects continues at two local primary schools and tomato seed planting was provided to three year 3 classes at one of the schools for a third year in a row. Flowering bushes and plants at the mini roundabout at the junction of Regal Way and Vista Way continue to develop and a wide range of pollinators at this roundabout have been observed. The Friends of Woodcock Park recognised the achievements of this project by awarding a local five year old with a prize at their AGM for his initiative in getting this roundabout improved and maintained. Some additional support was provided for another mini-roundabout in a cul-de-sac named The Leys also in Kenton, HA3 The BWCBP CIC was also involved in a clear up operation of a piece of neglected fly-tipped green space at the corner of The Mall and Preston Hill in Kenton. This Project – The Preston and Mall Biodiversity Project - is ongoing and will require some additional funding to engage a Tree Company to prune back some of the self-seeded trees and open up the floor of the green space to allow more light to reach the ground level.
