ForMed Films CIC specialise in co-creative storytelling for healthcare and social good. We engage with the lived experience of patients and healthcare professionals, and use this personal perspective for impactful engagement through digital media - including animation, audio and illustration. We bring people’s experiences, emotions and words of advice into focus, to help demystify complex and taboo subjects with sensitivity and compassion. We create work that is beautiful, thoughtful and clear, helping people to empathise and relate to one another, make informed choices, and take action for positive health and wellbeing. Our aim is to engage with lived experience and creative excellence to empower better health and social outcomes. During the year Jan 2024 - Jan 2025 the CIC benefited the community in the following ways: FLAGSHIP FILMS ‘BECOMING A DAD’ A co-created animation exploring the experiences of new parents from the father’s perspective. Purpose: Becoming a dad is a major life change. Sometimes dads can feel overlooked at this time. They may find it harder to discuss how the change is affecting them or to access available support, which can impact on their mental and physical wellbeing, and that of their family. Partners: Developed in collaboration with Blackburn with Darwen Family Hub, with input from Dad Matters and service users, and supported by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council. Co-production lead at BwD Family Hub was Lara McNally. Outcome: This film gives voice to the diverse experiences of five real-life dads, including trauma and challenges, strength and resilience. The film aims to promote conversation; encouraging dads to open up about their experiences and to seek help if they need it. Launch: The film was launched at the Blackburn with Darwen Dads Conference at the Livesey Family Hub on 18th June 2025. The film was presented alongside speakers from DadPad, Blackburn Rovers Dads’ FC, Dad Matters, Family Hub Network, dads’ mental health service, and a key note speech from Dr Anna Machin. Healthcare teams were encouraged to share the film with their colleagues and service users, to support dads-to-be and new parents, and to improve access to support services. Feedback: “Knowing the impact this film will have on men and dads is amazing. I am very proud to have been a part of this whole animation” - Participant “I’m two months away from becoming a father and this was a great learning opportunity” - Audience at Family Hubs Conference ‘THE CARING CONNECTION’ A co-created animation to promote a loving secure relationship between primary caregivers’ and their infants. We completed this flagship animation in 2024-2025 and launched it in May 2024. Purpose: Expecting a baby and becoming a parent can be a time of great joy, but it can also be a very challenging and emotional time and it is common to feel overwhelmed, feel a dip in confidence and struggle with the adjustment and new responsibilities of parenthood. The new Parent and Infant Relationship Service (PaIRS) in Blackpool support parents who have struggled in the early connection with baby, and supports them in finding a sensitive interaction and a better bond. The film will be used to help parents know that they are not alone and that support is available, promoting the new service to new parents and health professionals to help people who need help to get the support they need. Partners: The Parent-Infant Relationship Service at NHS Blackpool Teaching Hospitals is a new service that aims to promote a loving secure relationship between primary caregivers and their infants. The service focuses on the very special relationship between parents and infants that develops in the early years of a child’s life, in particular the first 1001 critical days, this is such an important time for babies and infants. The service is for pregnant parents and primary caregivers (including parents, foster carers, grandparents, or others who may be in this role), with babies and young children up to the age of five, who live in Blackpool and would like support with early relationship difficulties. Outcome: The Caring Connection shares four women’s experiences on how the Parent-Infant Relationship Service helps primary caregivers and their infants build a stronger relationship, which lays the positive foundation for health and well-being that can last a lifetime. An animation to share real experiences from four parents supported by the parent-infant relationship service at NHS Blackpool Teaching Hospitals. The film starts conversations, lets people know they are not alone and helps them to find support. Feedback: "I've just returned from a visit where I showed the mum the ForMed video -- she cried 'in a good way'! She felt it was really powerful, especially showing how dark things were in the beginning compared with how positive things felt by the end... It was emotional for us both watching it especially considering how far she has come!" - PAiRS Practitioner Award: The film was shortlisted in the Smiley Charity Film Awards 2025. ‘A LITTLE DEEP SLEEP’ -- French-Canadian Translation In 2024-2025 we adapted this existing ForMed Films animation for a French-Canadian audience, in collaboration with the Montreal Children’s Hospital at the McGill University Health Centre, Quebec. The voices and locations were adapted following on site recordings and gathering, to create 2 new bespoke versions of the film ‘A Little Deep Sleep’ (English Canadian) and ‘Un Petit Dodo Special’ (Quebecois). The film is shown to children and their families, when preparing to undergo paediatric general anaesthetics. This original film created with Bristol Children’s Hospital has now reached in excess of one million views worldwide, representing significant impact on patients, families and healthcare teams. ‘A PK DAY’ -- Translation and Publication of Research This year we translated our animated film ‘A PK Day’ into Dutch, French and Wolof, and were delighted that the film was featured in The Lancet’s Journal of Child & Adolescent Health. The article was written on behalf of the Penta Foundation’s Youth Trials Board by Anne Kamphuis, Lungile Jafta, Tom Jacobs, and is entitled ‘Empowering young voices in clinical research: co-creation of an educational video to support informed assent’. The article is available to view here: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(25)00138-5/abstract Excerpts: ‘Youth Trials Board members have unanimously highlighted that participant information sheets and consent forms in clinical studies -- typically created by adults -- are lengthy and complex. These documents are designed to meet regulatory and industry standards, rather than the needs of young readers. As a result, many children do not read the documents and rely instead on health-care workers and their caregivers for advice. ‘The YTB members suggested that a short, engaging video would help their peers understand why pharmacokinetic studies matter and what a PK day entails. This feedback inspired us -- colleagues from the Radboud University Medical Center, MRC Clinical Trials Unit at UCL, Penta Foundation, and ForMed Films. In collaboration with children who had experienced a PK day, we decided to create a video that would inform children who are invited to participate in their own PK day. The video aims to illustrate the purpose and process of pharmacokinetic studies, and to highlight the impact that participants’ contributions have on improvement of treatment for children globally. ‘We strongly encourage researchers across all settings to collaborate with children in creating informational materials for paediatric clinical trials as all children, regardless of geography and socioeconomic status, share the same needs and rights when it comes to informed participation in clinical research. By ensuring that every child understands their importance in research for child health, we come closer to ensuring that no child is left behind.’ ‘PERINATAL POSITIVITY’ -- Talk to Someone partnership with Tommy’s and Mind A previous project ‘Perinatal Positivity’ was adapted to make a new campaign to reach parents during pregnancy. The ‘Talk to Someone’ campaign, delivered by two major charities; Tommy’s and Mind, along with The Motherhood Group, featured new voices and animation alongside original work from perinatal positivity. The campaign created by ForMed in collaboration with Tommys and Mind, aimed to reach parents people from different ethnic communities to highlight maternal mental health experiences during pregnancy. Four new campaign films were produced, in landscape (screen shape) and portrait (for social media channels). The campaign was delivered in English, Croatian, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish and Swiss German. The campaign ran on Instagram, YouTube and Tik-Tok. ADDITIONAL ENGAGEMENT In addition to the impacts of our flagship animated films, noted above, we further supported a wide community of beneficiaries through the following activities; BFI ANIMATION CAMP: Founder and CEO Emma Lazenby spoke at the British Film Institute’s Animation Camp in Bristol, a week-long opportunity to help young animators develop their skillset and to support them on their journey. In partnership with BFI and Calling the Shots. SUBMARINE MERMAID POSTAL SERVICE: Emma Lazenby designed a logo for The Submarine Mermaid Postal Service; a service that works to support young children during submarine deployments at sea where a parent/carer or relative is on deployment and unable to contact the shore. The project sends messages through the Royal Mail and Morse code to help keep parents and children connected; to celebrate milestones, support during challenging times, and maintain relationship through fun communication. In partnership with Rise and Rewild CIC. LET'S TALK BIRTH CONFERENCE: Emma created free-of-charge animated trailers and stings to be shown leading up to and on the a one-day festival about birth held in Manchester. She attended the festival, hosted a stall, and shared ForMed’s work and free birth resources with healthcare professionals and maternity specialists. In partnership with Let’s Talk Birth Collaboration in Maternity Services. CLEFT DEVELOPMENT: Our team developed a proposal for a package of films on the subject of cleft palate, with the aim of supporting children and families through the journey of treatment. Emma attended the Cleft Development Group and presented the idea of delivering a campaign that would join Cleft Networks in the UK together.
