ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Charitable activities
From January 2024 we continued with our programme of governance reform with scaled-back services. During this time many of our policies were reviewed and rewritten.
Vicky Torrance, our Interim Executive Officer (recruited April 2023),.worked to support the trustees to:
| 1) | re-engage with the membership of Through Unity and consult with them about the future direction and work of Through Unity. |
| 2) | overhaul Through Unity's governance structure, including a planned move to become a CIO |
| 3) | put together a credible sustainability plan, and secure the necessary resources for our future work. |
Fundraising
In 2024 the charitable funds were running low and there were legitimate concerns about how we would continue to deliver support to families given the circumstances. Therefore considerable effort went into fundraising, as we were not able to deliver in-person support and events without funding.
During 2024 we successfully applied for grants from:
| - | Awards for All - value 20k |
| - | Ground Work - value 2k |
| - | Charles Platter Trust - value 5k |
Launch of new-look website
Due to lack of funds, the charity lost its website and had to get a new web address and start again. In 2024, work went into the new website to ensure that it was reflective of the families' voices. We also made sure we told Through Unity's founding story on the site. This was particularly poignant in light of the deaths of both Richard Taylor and Rani King Moorcroft, who were both instrumental in the founding of Through Unity. During this time we did a lot of research for our signposting pages and contacted people who advertise our services to change the address of our website on their websites.
In-person delivery
We were not able to hold any family days due to lack of funds.
Support for a member: Article 2 inquest into the death of her daughter
We arranged a rota of people to be at the Old Bailey to support three Through Unity members who were attending the inquest of their family member. Our volunteers were at court as often as possible during the inquest, as well as meeting with the family after sessions in court. We gave full support to the family on the pre-hearing day, first day, verdict day, and last day. We provided a care package for the family to help with stress-reduction and sleep during the inquest. We provided telephone support at other times when volunteers could not be present at the court in person. Crucially, we were able to support the family on one particularly distressing day when their daughter's convicted killer was in court giving evidence."
Online delivery
In the absence of face-to-face delivery, we held a number of meetings via Zoom. Many of these meetings were arranged to enable family members to help design and shape the funding bids that were being made, as well as to provide emotional support.
Through Unity also delivered a scaled-back (due to funding constraints) core service of:
| - | one-to-one support and signposting for families bereaved through homicide |
| - | referrals to PTSD councillors, Escaping Victimhood's four-day workshop, and foodbanks. |
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Principal funding sources
Through Unity's main sources of funding are donations from the general public and grants from charitable organisations.
THROUGH UNITY (REGISTERED NUMBER: 06459522)
REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
FINANCIAL REVIEW
Reserves policy
It is always difficult to plan or develop services within a voluntary organisation, with its constant need to find funding and in an atmosphere of insecurity of long-term funding agreements.
Our reserves policy is set to ensure our work is protected from the risk of disruption at short notice due to a lack of funds, while at the same time ensuring we do not retain income for longer than required.
It is the policy of the charity to maintain unrestricted funds, which are free reserves of the charity. The purpose of maintaining unrestricted funds is to cover:
- financial commitments when they arise
- designated projects to be undertaken when appropriate
- administration and support costs for the charity
- sufficient promotion of its objects
The trustees consider it prudent that unrestricted reserves should be sufficient:
- to cover 3 months administration and support costs
The reserves policy is kept under periodic review and reserves levels will be adjusted as perceptions of risk and other factors change.
As at 31 December 2024, the unrestricted funds stood at £21,814 (2023 £26,437) and restricted funds stood at £9,356 (2023:£nil).
FUTURE PLANS
After discussions with our members, Through Unity's future plans are:
| 1) | To revitalise our volunteer policy and training, and to train new volunteers in order to increase the amount of one-to-one befriending and support we can offer |
| 2) | To continue to work towards improvements in our governance, including moving to become a CIO and to recruit trustees to the board with lived experience of bereavement through homicide (we would particularly aim to recruit at least one trustee from the existing Through Unity membership, who would be able to represent the views of members of Through Unity in our decision-making) |
| 3) | To work towards a sustainable funding model in order to develop new services of: |
| - | supporting charities led by victims of crime |
- |
increasing the voice/representation of people bereaved through homicide in government policies that affect them, particularly within the Criminal Justice System. |
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
Through Unity incorporated on 21 December 2007 and is governed by its Memorandum and Articles of Association. At the AGM held on 20 November 2008, the Memorandum and Articles of Association were amended and new Memorandum and Articles of Association were adopted by special resolution registered at Companies House on 19 December 2008.
Charity status
Through Unity is a charitable company limited by guarantee, as defined by the Companies Act 2006, and is a registered charitable company with the Charity Commission.
Through Unity was registered as a charity on 2 December 2008.
Membership
Through Unity membership under the Articles of Association is open to other individuals or organisations who apply in the form required by the charity and are approved by the trustees. The trustees may establish classes of membership with different rights and obligations although such rights or obligations can only be varied by the pre-requisite number of members. Members guarantee to contribute an amount not exceeding £10 to the assets of the charity in the event of winding up.
Financial statements
The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their financial statements in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The trustees' report and financial statements are submitted to the Charity Commission following approval by the membership at the AGM.

REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
Trustees are appointed under the terms of the Articles of Association. The number of trustees shall be not less than three but shall not be subject to any maximum.
Organisational structure
Typically the trustees oversee the governance framework. The trustees delegate operational responsibility for certain aspects of the charity's activities to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CEO is responsible for the provision of the charity's services, and also for ensuring that the services are delivered in accordance with the policies laid down by the trustees, and with the objectives of the charity. During 2024 the CEO role was filled by a freelancer, Vicky Torrance, who worked as funds allowed. Due to the limited resources, Trustees worked closely with Vicky Torrance in the delivery of the services of the charity, meeting monthly to oversee the work.
Induction and training of new trustees
This year TU did a recruitment drive to recruit new trustees, with an emphasis on those with lived experience of bereavement through homicide. As a result three new trustees were appointed - all with lived experience. Two of the three new trustees were existing Through Unity members.
The trustees offer a wide range of skills and experience essential to the good governance of the charity. On an informal basis, new trustees undergo orientation to brief them on their legal obligations under charity and company law, the content of the Memorandum and Articles of Association and decision-making process, the business plan and recent financial performance, and to meet key persons of the charity. Trustees are encouraged to attend appropriate external training events where these will facilitate the undertaking of their role and other aspects of Through Unity's work. The trustees review their written procedures in line with all other procedural documents on a regular basis.
Related parties
The trustees are aware of the guidance given by the Charity Commission, including the risk posed by transactions with close family members, and are of the opinion that no transactions have arisen concerning related parties.
Through Unity knows or has reasonable cause to believe that there is no registrable person or registrable legal entity in relation to the charity.
Indemnity insurance
Under the terms of the Articles of Association the trustees shall be indemnified out of the assets of the charity against any liability incurred by him/her in defending any proceedings in which judgement is given in their favour. To mitigate any potential costs arising from such proceedings, the charity has obtained the necessary indemnity insurance.
STATEMENT OF TRUSTEES' RESPONSIBILITIES
The trustees (who are also the directors of Through Unity for the purposes of company law) are responsible for preparing the Report of the Trustees and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice) including Financial Reporting Standard 102 "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland".
Company law requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and of the incoming resources and application of resources, including the income and expenditure, of the charitable company for that period. In preparing those financial statements, the trustees are required to
| - | select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently; |
| - | observe the methods and principles in the Charity SORP; |
| - | make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent; |
| - | prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in business. |
The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the charitable company and to enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Through Unity
I report to the trustees (who are also Directors for the purpose of company law) on my examination of the financial statements of Through Unity ('the charitable company') for the year ended 31 December 2024 which comprise the Statement of Financial Activities, the Balance Sheet and related notes.
This report is made solely to the charity's trustees, as a body, in accordance with section 145 of the Charities Act 2011. My work has been undertaken so that I might state to the charity's trustees those matters I am required to state to them in this report and for no other purpose. To the fullest extent permitted by law, I do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than the charity and the charity's trustees as a body, for my work, for this report, or for the opinions I have formed.
Responsibilities and basis of report
As the trustees of charitable company, you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Companies Act 2006 ('the 2006 Act').
Having satisfied myself that the financial statements of the charitable company are not required to be audited under Part 16 of the Act and are eligible for independent examination, I report in respect of my examination of the charitable company's financial statements carried out under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011 ('the 2011 Act') and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
An independent examination does not involve gathering all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently does not cover all the matters that an auditor considers in giving their opinion on the financial statements. The planning and conduct of an audit goes beyond the limited assurance that an independent examination can provide. Consequently, I express no opinion as to whether the financial statements present a 'true and fair' view and my report is limited to those specific matters set out in the independent examiner's statement.
Independent examiner's statement
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
| - | accounting records were not kept in respect of the charitable company as required by section 386 of the 2006 Act; or |
| - | the financial statements do not accord with those records; or |
| - | the fiinancial statements do not comply with the accounting requirements of section 396 of the 2006 Act other than any requirement that the financial statements give a 'true and fair view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination; or |
| - | the financial statements have not been prepared in accordance with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice for accounting and reporting by charities applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102). |
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.

THROUGH UNITY
NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
| 1. | ACCOUNTING POLICIES |
Basis of preparing the financial statements
The financial statements of the charitable company, which is a public benefit entity under FRS 102, have been prepared in accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102) 'Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their financial statements in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102), Financial Reporting Standard 102 'The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland' and the Companies Act 2006. The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy note(s).
Preparation of the financial statements on a going concern basis
The financial statements are drawn up on the going concern basis which assumes Through Unity will continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. The Board of Trustees have given due consideration to the working capital and cash flow requirements of Through Unity. The Board of Trustees consider Through Unity's current and forecast cash resources to be sufficient to cover the working capital requirements of the charity for at least 12 months from the date of signing the financial statements.
Income
Income is recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the item(s) of income have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably. Income received in advance of a service is deferred until the criteria for income recognition are met. Income arises in the United Kingdom.
Income from government and other grants, whether 'capital' grants or 'revenue' grants, is recognised when the charity has entitlement to the funds, any performance conditions attached to the grants have been met, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably and is not deferred.
Gifts in kind are valued at estimated value to the charity. They are included in the charity's financial statements if the estimated value is in excess of £500.
Interest receivable on funds held on deposit is included when receivable and the amount can be measured reliably by the charity; this is normally upon notification of the interest paid or payable by the bank.
Unrestricted charitable donations are recognised in the financial statements when the charitable donation has been received, or if, before receipt, there is sufficient evidence to provide the necessary certainty that the donation will be received and the value of the incoming resources can be measured with sufficient reliability.
Donated professional services and facilities are recognised as income when the charity has control over the item, any conditions associated with the donated item have been met, the receipt of economic benefit from the use by the charity of the item is probable and that economic benefit can be measured reliably. In accordance with the Charities SORP (FRS 102), the general volunteer time is not recognised. On receipt, donated professional services and facilities are recognised on the basis of the value of the gift to the charity which is the amount the charity would have been willing to pay to obtain services or facilities of equivalent economic benefit on the open market; a corresponding amount is then recognised in expenditure in the period of receipt.
Expenditure
Liabilities are recognised as expenditure as soon as there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably. Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all cost related to the category. Where costs cannot be directly attributed to particular headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Tangible fixed assets
Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life.
| Computer equipment | - |
All assets are initially recognised at cost and subsequently carried at cost less accumulated depreciation. The cost of an asset initially recognised includes its purchase price and any cost that is directly attributable to bringing the asset to the location and condition necessary for it to be capable of operating in the manner intended by management.

Taxation
The charity is an institution within the meaning of the Charities Act 2011 and as such is a charity within the meaning of Section 506(1) of the Taxes Act 1988. Accordingly, the charity is potentially exempt from taxation in respect of income or capital gains within categories covered by Section 505 of the Taxes Act 1988 or Section 256 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to the extent that such income or gains are applied exclusively to charitable purposes. The charity receives no similar exemption in respect of Value Added Tax.
The charity is an institution which is established for charitable purposes within the meaning of the Charities Act 2011 and as such is a charity within the meaning of Para 1 of Schedule 6 to the Finance Act 2010. Accordingly, the charity is potentially exempt from taxation in respect of income or capital gains received within categories covered by Sections 478-488 of the Corporation Tax Act 2010 (formerly enacted in Section 505 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988) or Section 256 of the Taxation of Chargeable Gains Act 1992 to the extent that such income or gains are applied to exclusively charitable purposes. The charity receives no similar exemption in respect of Value Added Tax. For this reason the charity is generally unable to recover input VAT it suffers on goods and services purchased. The charity is not registered for VAT, as the trustees consider the charity's sources of income are exempt from VAT. VAT is included within the attributable cost under resources expended.
Fund accounting
Unrestricted funds are donations and other income received or generated and can be used in accordance with the charitable objectives at the discretion of the trustees. Designated funds are included within unrestricted funds and are earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes.
Restricted funds can only be used for particular restricted purposes within the objects of the charity. Restrictions arise when specified by the donor or when funds are raised for particular restricted purposes. Expenditure which meets these criteria is charged to the fund together with a fair allocation of management and support costs.
Financial instruments
The Charity only enters basic financial instruments transactions that result in the recognition of financial assets and liabilities like trade and other debtors and trade creditors and other creditors.
Financial assets and liabilities are offset, and the net amount reported in the Statement of financial Position when there is an enforceable right to set off the recognised amounts and there is an intention to settle on a net basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.
Debtors: Basic financial assets, including trade and other debtors, are initially recognised at transaction price, unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the transaction is measured at the present value of the future receipts discounted at a market rate of interest. Such assets are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method, less any impairment.
Cash and Cash equivalents: Cash and cash equivalents are represented by cash in hand, deposits held at call with financial institutions, and other short-term highly liquid investments that mature in no more than three months from the date of acquisition and that are readily convertible to known amounts of cash with insignificant risk of change in value.
Creditors: Basic financial liabilities, including trade and other creditors, are initially recognised at transaction price, unless the arrangement constitutes a financing transaction, where the debt instrument is measured at the present value of the future payments discounted at a market rate of interest. Such instruments are subsequently carried at amortised cost using the effective interest method.
