Within the North Lambeth areas of London there are very limited options for parents who are unable to afford, or access, existing early years provision. This is particularly acute for parents who are not able to access government funded childcare schemes - which is disproportionately households from low-income backgrounds. Rendezvous Softplay CIC is a non-profit, community-based seeking to support parents and infants from low socio- economic backgrounds in the Lambeth and Waterloo areas of London with highly affordable access to day-time childcare and learning facilities. The CIC, operating since September 2023, is run at very low cost using subsidised community spaces. Typically, 10-20 families are attending each weekly session. In total around 100 families have engaged with the pilot. Almost all the families engaged are from the housing estates around Elephant & Castle, Lambeth and Southwark. The sessions have been structured using ‘zones’ - play and movement for 12-36 months, sensory for 0-12 months. The sessions have been most popular with children aged 6-18 months, although children aged 36 months are also attending. Children who attend the sessions benefit from structured play activities, encouraging peer-to-peer interaction, as well as engagement in literacy activities through story-time, singing and language games. In addition to the regular sessions, community workshops have been introduced for families, offering practical learning opportunities such as speech and language workshops, self-care sessions, and early phonics workshops. These have supported parents and caregivers in enhancing their children’s development and wellbeing at home Courses are now started to be introduced to the families. Parents benefit from engaging with the sessions, developing their skills to support early years development, as well as building a trusted support network in the local community - particularly important for families who may have recently moved into the area or who do not have English as a first language.
We ran a six-week pilot programme from August 2025, offering free lunches to families. Following this, we were fortunate to receive sponsorship for one of our family events, which enabled us to provide free snacks, sandwiches, and drinks to children and families. Our sponsor has also expressed interest in continuing their support in the future. We have distributed a survey to gauge parents’ interest in life skills courses, such as first aid and family law support. Based on the positive feedback received, we are now exploring opportunities to develop and deliver these courses for children and families.
