Abbey Gymnastics CIC offers professional gymnastics classes and fitness programmes with a participant-centred approach. Our classes are open to children, young people and adults of all ages and abilities. Our coaches focus on building discipline and teamwork while helping each participant grow in self-confidence and self-esteem. We aim to help individuals reach their full potential through gymnastics and related health-focused activities. A key aim of our programme is to engage the community of West Belfast by providing access to sport, health, fitness and coach education - particularly for those affected by long-term deprivation. Facility Developments: 2024 seen the expansion of our facility in to a 3rd unit. This now makes Abbey Gymnastics facility 9900 sq ft compared to the 3300 sq ft in 2010. This has enabled the club to increase membership and make running events smoother and more efficient. Staffing & Volunteers: This year, Abbey employed 5 full-time and 6 part-time staff, in both paid and voluntary roles. We were also supported by 7 members of the Parents’ Fundraising and Events Committee, as well as 3 voluntary judges. Welfare: Welfare Officer Michele Cowan and Head Coach Alison McMullan attended the annual British Gymnastics Safeguarding Conference in England, gaining updates on policies and procedures. Leadership Academy: In 2023/2024, our Leadership Academy continued to grow. We now have 31 members aged 11 and up, with one of our senior members progressing to university in Manchester. This group played a key role in planning and delivering our annual showcase, prize-giving, regional competitions, and the Belfast Festival of Gymnastics. Our existing Leadership Academy members continued to attend monthly meetings covering key topics such as safeguarding, online safety, and more. Two of our Young Leaders completed the British Gymnastics Level 1 in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics, one completed the BG Level 2 in Women’s Artistic and three Young Leaders completed the BG Pre-school add on module.
The Company's stakeholders are the gymnasts who take part in our classes and their parents. Coaches are encouraged to talk to parents/gymnasts and listen to any comments they may have, and parents are made aware that they are welcome to discuss issues with coaches at any time. The Club has a Parents' Committee/Fundraising Committee. Regular joint coaches'/parents' meetings take place which are a platform for issues to be discussed and ideas to be put forward and actions agreed. The Club makes use of a Website, Facebook page and Instagram which, as well as being a means of relaying information, are also a means of receiving feedback. The Club provide a feedback box and have arranged individual and group consultations with parents of specific disciplines twice annually.
