The impact of Leave No Trace Brighton’s activities is significant, particularly in educating and empowering the community to take action against littering and pollution.: 1. Environmental Benefits: By conducting regular community beach cleans, the organisation directly contributes to reducing litter. 2. Community Empowerment: The #brightonpledge and #take3forthesea initiatives educate and encourage responsible behaviour, fostering a sense of ownership among residents and visitors. This is particularly crucial given the increased usage of natural spaces, which has historically led to higher litter levels. 3. Collaborative Impact: Partnerships with organisations like Surfers Against Sewage for events such as the Zero-Waste Beach day initiative, enhancing their reach, impact and mobilising volunteers. 4. Long-Term Sustainability: A documentary released in April 2025, co-created by Daniel Satchell and Coral Evans, highlights their potential for national and global impact, emphasising education and advocacy against major polluters like commercial fishing vessels. This underscores their role in driving lasting change.
1. Community Workshops and Surveys: Leave No Trace Brighton conducted three community workshops between June 2024 and January 2025, engaging over 150 residents and volunteers. These workshops focused on identifying local environmental concerns, such as single-use plastics and coastal litter, and co-developing solutions like expanded on-the-go recycling initiatives. An online survey distributed via social media and community networks received 320 responses, providing valuable insights into public attitudes toward waste reduction and recycling, which informed our 2024-2025 campaign priorities. 2. Partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council: Helping to influence the change to the City's Events Sustainability Policy/Commitments, the updated policy includes but is not limited to; the reduction of single-use plastics, emphasis on reusable containers, electric power over diesel generators. 3. Business Engagement Initiatives: Recognising the role of local businesses in reducing environmental impact, we held targeted consultations with 25 coastal businesses, including cafes and tourism operators, in September 2024. These sessions explored practical measures to minimise single-use plastics and promote responsible tourism, drawing on lessons from the EU Interreg BioCultural Heritage Tourism Project. Feedback from businesses led to the development of a pilot “Single-Use Plastic Free Zone” scheme, funding dependent - set to launch in late Summer 2025. 4. Volunteer and Educational Outreach: Leave No Trace Brighton organised six volunteer-led beach and park clean-up events, each accompanied by pre-event consultations to ensure accessibility and inclusivity. We also partnered with the University of Brighton to deliver two environmental education workshops for students in January 2025, gathering feedback on youth engagement strategies to shape future outreach programs. Outcomes and Impact: The consultations strengthened our relationships with stakeholders and directly formed our 2024-2025 initiatives. Key outcomes included: Enhanced community participation in clean-up events, with a 20% increase in volunteer turnout compared to 2023-2024. Strengthened alignment with council-led waste management projects, contributing to the city’s low landfill waste rate. Development of the “BrightonPledge” pilot, with 10 businesses committed to participation by Q4 2025. Looking Ahead in 2025-2026, Leave No Trace Brighton will build on these consultations by launching a stakeholder advisory group to ensure ongoing collaboration and by expanding our educational outreach to primary schools. We remain committed to empowering our community and partners to protect Brighton’s natural environment, leaving no trace for future generations.
