Company activities and impact

During the financial year 2024–2025, The Butterfly Effected CIC continued to make a meaningful impact through public art, film, and creative community projects, using creativity as a catalyst for connection, empowerment, and social change. Our work has inspired pride, strengthened community identity, and delivered lasting cultural and social value both locally and internationally. Key Activities This Year Included: Common Walls International Mural Festival – Rochdale A major highlight of the year was the Common Walls International Mural Festival, delivered in partnership with Rochdale Council and Rochdale Creates. The festival brought together 10 international street artists and 8 local artists to transform Rochdale town centre with large-scale murals that revitalised the urban landscape. Over 10,000 visitors attended the festival across the weekend, enjoying free community workshops, live art sessions, and fringe events. The event inspired creativity, strengthened local pride, supported the town’s cultural regeneration, and showcased Rochdale as a destination for public art and cultural tourism. Documentary Series: Darkness to Light Our ongoing Darkness to Light documentary series continued production this year, exploring key social issues through film, art, and lived experience. The first episode focused on addiction recovery, while the second instalment, Darkness to Light: Violent Crime and Safer communities, examined the impact of violence and the power of resilience. The series amplifies real voices, encourages empathy, and uses storytelling as a tool for healing, awareness, and dialogue. The Big Heart Project – Fleetwood We continued to build momentum for The Big Heart Project in Fleetwood, following the successful completion of its first murals in 2024. Follow-on mural projects utilising workshops for research and development have been held and are ongoing towards final murals in 2026. The initiative is shaped by community consultation and brings public art and pride back to local high streets. These works celebrate Fleetwood’s identity, local residents’ interests, and provide opportunities for the community and services to participate directly in the creative process. Public Murals & International Creative Projects Beyond Rochdale and Fleetwood, we delivered impactful mural projects in the UK and Mexico, transforming public spaces and strengthening creative connections across communities. Locations included: Liverpool, Rochdale, Blackpool, and Akumal (Mexico). Each project combined community participation and creative education, ensuring local voices were embedded in the artwork and its story. Workshops & Skills Development We delivered a range of free, inclusive workshops alongside each mural and creative project. These sessions allowed community members to gain artistic skills, confidence, and self-expression. By involving participants in real-world creative projects, we helped nurture talent and strengthen local engagement. Providing Opportunities & Supporting Local Artists Throughout 2024–2025, we provided paid opportunities for artists, filmmakers, and facilitators, supporting the growth of the local creative economy. Through partnerships and mentorship, we have strengthened networks, created platforms for collaboration, and encouraged sustainable creative employment across regions. Our Work Has Benefited the Community by: - Revitalising public spaces and strengthening local pride - Providing free cultural events and access to creativity for all - Raising awareness of social issues through film and storytelling - Empowering participants through hands-on workshops and education - Supporting artists and creative professionals with paid work and exposure - Building cross-sector partnerships that connect communities and services - Attracting visitors and investment into local areas through arts and culture

Stakeholders Include: - Local residents and community groups - Artists, filmmakers, and facilitators - Charities and service providers - Local authorities, businesses, and sponsors - Volunteers and project participants Consultation Process & Actions Taken: - We engage stakeholders through community meetings, consultations, and workshops during each project’s planning and delivery stages. - Feedback gathered during these sessions ensures that projects are co-created and truly reflect local identity and priorities. - In Fleetwood, local residents continue to shape the themes of The Big Heart Project murals. - For Common Walls, we collaborated with Rochdale Council, Rochdale Creates, and local artists to design an accessible, inclusive event that served both creative and social aims. - The Darkness to Light series continues to be informed by direct community input, ensuring authenticity in storytelling and representation.
