During its first year of operation as a CIC, Steeky Meadow has developed the site and integrated with the local community in the following ways. Tavistock Youth Cafe groups have visited on several occasions. Young people have benefitted from spending time in the outdoors, learning countryside skills, and gaining understanding of environment and wildlife issues. Wildlife benefits include putting up bird and dormouse boxes, developing the orchard of Tamar valley apple varieties, and coppice rotation of trees. Countryside skills involving local youth groups and the local community, particularly children, have experienced, bee keeping, spoon carving, and stream sampling. Craft events and classes encouraging the use of traditional tools. The Directors have invested in Steeky Meadow CIC through improved facilities on site such as a compost toilet and shelter for activities. The Directors have enhanced their skills and qualifications with Paediatric outdoor first aid, DBS checks and Safeguarding training.
The Steeky Meadow stakeholders are: Tamar Valley National Landscape (TVNL): We have worked closely to ensure that the development of the land and woodland fits closely with TVNL objectives. Tavistock Youth Cafe: The Wellbeing and Momentum youth groups have given feedback on the development of sessions which now include; bush-craft, stream sampling, nature trails, and traditional countryside skills. Milton Combe village community: An open day was attended by around 40 local villagers who were enthusiastic about Steeky Meadow CIC and gave guidance on new initiatives. Steeky Meadow has been involved in village events such as the local craft fair. Farming in Protected Landscapes (FiPL): Steeky Meadow has worked closely with the FiPL administrators in matching our activity with the FiPL objectives to enhance wildlife habitat, encourage community engagement with nature and the countryside, and to manage water courses to minimise flooding.
