During this financial year we pursued our mission to support social, educational and housing opportunities for people in and around Watchet, Somerset. - We initiated a structured review of local housing requirements, focusing particularly on affordability, accessibility, and sustainability within the Watchet area. This included engagement with Somerset Council's housing strategy documents, consultation with local residents, and preliminary site assessments for community-led housing projects that could provide secure and affordable homes for local people. - We held open community consultations and informal engagement sessions to identify local priorities, with particular attention to young people, families, and those at risk of social or financial exclusion. This process has helped shape a shared vision for community-led housing that complements local educational and social needs. - We supported local individuals to access information, mentoring, and advice relating to housing, community development, and social enterprise. This included guidance on pathways into construction, environmental design, and sustainable living - fostering both skills development and community empowerment. - We also focused on establishing the governance, partnerships, and evidence base required to proceed with development of community-owned or co-operative housing and multi-use community spaces. We have also started developing a pipeline of potential projects which integrate housing with learning and well-being opportunities.
Base for Life Watchet CIC has engaged directly with residents, local voluntary organisations, and educational partners to ensure that our work reflects the genuine priorities of the community. We have also begun discussions with local tradespeople, planners, and youth representatives to support inclusive and future-proofed design principles.
