OPEN ACADEMIC RESEARCH UK CIC

Directors' report period ended 28 February 2025

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 28 February 2025

Principal activities of the company

The principal activities of Open Academic Research UK CIC during the reporting period have focused on fostering innovation and enhancing the capabilities of stakeholders, specifically targeting creative thinkers, researchers, and students from the Global South, particularly India, while also including individuals from Europe. Our commitment has been to provide advanced training and develop cutting-edge innovations in the fields of nanotechnology, quantum technology, and biophysics. Impact on stakeholders: Despite not generating any financial income during this period, the CIC has had a significant impact on the following stakeholders: 1. Students and early career researchers: Seven students have been directly involved in our programs. Their areas of work included, nanotechnology, quantum technology, biophysics, education, and social science. Outcomes: Each student has produced high-quality research outputs, positioning them as early-career stage researchers and potential leaders in their respective fields. This engagement has equipped them with skills and knowledge that will enhance their future academic and professional prospects. 2. Creative Thinkers & Researchers: The CIC created a collaborative environment where innovative ideas were exchanged. This networking has strengthened the connections between researchers from different backgrounds, leading to collaborative opportunities that transcend geographic boundaries. Health and operational challenges: The directors have been impacted with long-COVID, presenting significant challenges in maintaining the CIC's operational capacity. This health crisis has strained our ability to effectively manage and oversee the CIC’s activities. Consequently, after careful consideration, the decision has been made to close the CIC and proceed with a strike-off. While no financial transactions took place, we believe the value of the positive influence on the academic and research landscape far outweighs the lack of financial outputs. In conclusion, despite the absence of financial transactions, Open Academic Research UK CIC has achieved its mission to empower students and researchers from the Global South and Europe. The high-quality research produced by our participants serves as a testament to the impact of our pro-bono activities. We are proud of the legacy left behind in the form of knowledge, skills, and collaborative partnerships, even as we face the decision to close the CIC. This report reflects our dedication to fostering talent and innovation during challenging circumstances. We extend our gratitude to all stakeholders for their involvement and support throughout this journey. This report is presented by the Board of Directors of Open Academic Research UK CIC.

Company activities and impact

The company could not run its operation as expected due to the director, Dr Siddharth Ghosh, has remained ill since COVID. Director Dr Moumita Ghosh is also impacted by long-COVID. They could not operate the CIC as originally planned. Also, they could not return to the UK since COVID due to their mobility issues. Thus, they have decided to close/strike-off the company. The company has remained dormant without any financial transactions. Despite this situation, the directors have impacted the creative thinkers in India by training them with advanced academic research specifically in the field of nanotechnology and quantum technology. This has positively impacted a few students lives in India. They have published scientific papers in specific fields are published. These fields are nanotechnology, creativity, and education. Some students are now well positioned to be future leaders in their respective fields. These activities were executed as pro-bono activities or without financial transactions. Multiple policy level research discussions were taken place with the leaders in the field to improve the situation in education, innovation, and research in the global south and global north. These activities were performed without financial transactions.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are creative thinkers and researchers from under-privileged communities in the global south. The directors of the company have spent time predominantly in India for a number of years and developed various strategies for sustainable development of human capital resources, which includes training them to understand the greater good and follow their curiosity. All feedbacks suggested us to focus primarily in India's grassroots. Following this suggestion, we think operating this CIC from the UK is not practically feasible at present due to no major financial transactions/income has been generated since the incorporation of the company has taken place.
