ExtraVerte managed to recruit additional volunteers to increase the number of times the heritage site was open for the public to visit. This greatly increased the degree of public engagement with this unique building. It also gave young adults an opportunity to start to take responsibility for the building which will help secure its longer future. We also completed the renovation of the original front door to conservation standards increasing both the visual amenity of the Tower and its safety/security. We successfully bid for local funding from the Community Infrastructure Levy to make some (non conservation) improvements: repair/repainting of the access steps and replacement of the roof hatch which had seriously degraded allowing water ingress and reduce safety for Tower visitors. Some addition work on this project remains to be completed (it was scheduled as an 18 month project) next year.
Feedback from the volunteer group who maintain the surrounding gardens indicated that they had reservations about the stairs being painted - but with discussion and sharing the background to the decision, they fully supported the work. As is always essential, we sought permission from both the council (landlord) and Historic England before starting the work to repair the front door and the permissions were granted with no reservations.
