During the financial year, Spectrum Dynamics CIC focused on reducing the barriers that neurodivergent children, young people and their families face in education and work, rather than trying to “fix” individuals. We provided one to one and group support for parents and carers in Lancaster and the wider Lancashire area who were dealing with emotionally based school avoidance, exclusions and difficulties accessing SEND support. This included helping families understand their legal rights under the SEND Code of Practice and the Equality Act 2010, preparing for Education, Health and Care Plan processes, and challenging discriminatory decisions by schools and local authorities. Families report feeling more confident in meetings, clearer about their options, and less isolated as a result of this support. GOV.UK +1 Alongside this, we delivered training and consultancy for schools, community groups and employment services on neuroinclusive practice. Sessions were co-designed with people who have lived experience of neurodivergence and framed disability through the social model, focusing on practical changes such as predictable routines, flexible communication, sensory regulation spaces and alternative ways for pupils and staff to show their strengths. Feedback shows increased understanding among staff and examples of small but significant adjustments being made in classrooms and workplaces. Derbyshire Local Offer +1 We also continued to develop digital tools, including the foundations of an AI assisted SEND information and advocacy resource, so that families who cannot attend in person can still access clear, rights based guidance in line with national statutory frameworks. GOV.UK Through these activities we have contributed to improved emotional wellbeing, reduced risk of school breakdown, greater awareness of legal rights, and stronger peer support networks for different thinkers and their families in our community.
During the year we have actively involved a range of stakeholders in shaping Spectrum Dynamics CIC’s work. Our key stakeholders are: neurodivergent children and young people, parents and carers, volunteers, schools and colleges, local community organisations, and partner agencies such as the local authority, NHS services and Jobcentre staff. Stakeholders have been consulted through our peer support group to address systemic community led change. We have developed new strengths based resources for schools on stimming, sensory regulation and emotionally based school avoidance; and prioritised the development of SpektraBot as an accessible tool for families who need timely, trauma informed information about SEND rights. Stakeholder input has directly influenced our priorities, language and delivery model throughout the year.
