COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

LOCAL ORIGIN CIC

Company Number: 15859588 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 July 2025

Company activities and impact

Local Origin is a food waste management and urban farming company operating at two sites; the Spitalfields Market and London Fruit & Wool Exchange (LFWE). We started operation at Spitalfields Market in 2023 and at LFWE in April 2025. Local Origin CIC came into being in July 2024. Our basic business model involves the collection and processing of food waste at these sites and using the compost produced to farm food produce which we then provide back to the kitchens on the site. The collection is completed by hand through communication with the facility management team. The processing is done on-site in an area assigned to us where we use aerobic and vermi-composting techniques to produce compost and liquid fertiliser. This is then used to produce microgreens and mushrooms all year and hydroponic fruit & veg in the summertime. Food is provided back to the kitchens and local community while compost is also sold into the local community. In FY2024-25, Local Origin CIC was in inception at LFWE and full operation at Spitalfields Market. Activities focused on scaling up the food waste management business at LFWE which included communication with the facility management team, restaurant team and other stakeholders at LFWE. At Spitalfields, we focused on continuing our food waste management activities. These activities have contributed to GHG emissions reduction through diverting waste away from landfill and energy-to-waste plants which has been the main benefit of the company to date. Going forwards, as we scale the business into FY2025-26, we hope to increase the number of benefits we can provide to the community including the provision of compost and food products, education briefs on food waste and urban farming and if fully successful provide local employment and volunteering opportunities.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders are found at Spitalfields Market and London Fruit & Wool Exchange (LFWE) and also within the local vicinity. Key stakeholders include the facility management teams, restaurant and kitchen teams, traders at the market and tenants at LFWE. Both directors work in the local area as well. As part of the planning phase for both operations, we spoke regularly with the facility management teams as well as stakeholders in the kitchen and tenants of the LFWE office building. We are in consistent contact with the LFWE facility management team now that we have started operation at the site which includes talking with stakeholders in security, waste management and project management. We consistently ask for feedback on our operations as food waste management can be disruptive due to to smell and vermin. We are proactive in our response to these issues and always prioritise any complaints immediately. We plan to do greater outreach with the local community including employees as part of the educational outreach program we intend to start.
