During its first year of operation, Underdogs Wellbeing focused on establishing the foundations needed to deliver community-focused mental health and wellbeing support in Dorchester. The primary activities undertaken during the year centred on fundraising and capacity-building to secure sufficient resources to open a dedicated safe space for local residents. Through a series of community fundraising efforts and partnership engagement, the organisation successfully raised the funds required to identify, secure, and prepare appropriate premises. Following this work, Underdogs Wellbeing obtained the keys to its first property on 1 December 2024. Over the subsequent weeks, the space was set up, decorated, furnished, and made ready for public access. The Den, a Safe Space Cafe officially opened to the community in mid-January, providing a welcoming, non-judgmental environment where individuals can seek support, connection, and wellbeing activities. Although the cafe opened shortly before the end of the reporting period, the work completed during the year directly contributed to creating a new, accessible resource for people experiencing loneliness, mental health challenges, or a need for community connection. The company’s activities have therefore had a positive impact by strengthening local well-being provision, engaging the community in its development, and laying the groundwork for an inclusive space designed to benefit people across Dorchester and the surrounding area
During its first year, Underdogs Wellbeing engaged with a range of stakeholders to ensure that the development of The Den reflected local needs and priorities. Key stakeholders included members of the local community, individuals with lived experience of mental health challenges, local voluntary and community sector organisations, potential service users, and supporters who contributed to early fundraising efforts. Consultation took place through informal conversations, online engagement, social media feedback, and discussions during fundraising events. These interactions helped the company understand community demand for a safe, welcoming space offering non-clinical wellbeing support. Common themes included the need for an accessible central location, opening hours, and a calm, supportive environment suitable for people who may feel anxious in traditional public spaces. In response to this feedback, Underdogs Wellbeing prioritised securing a central Dorchester property and designed The Den to be inclusive, comfortable, and community led. Stakeholder input also influenced the initial range of services planned for launch, ensuring they matched the needs expressed by those who would use and benefit from the space.
