BiCamp UK CIC organise and host BiCamp, a 4 day camping event. It is organised by volunteers from the bisexual community, for Bi+ people, their families and allies, with a focus on inclusion for multiply marginalised people including PoC and disabled campers. Our event is intended to gather the bisexual community at Kinver Camp Site in Staffordshire for workshops and social activities to strengthen our bonds and practical skills. Our aim is to create a safe and friendly environment for bisexual people and their allies to enjoy, and welcomes those who may be questioning how they identify themselves. The core values that BiCamp holds are: accessibility, anti-racism, and consent. Workshops and training before camp and at camp were hosted covering these values and the team are working to embed these values into the core structure of the CIC. During the year, volunteers fundraise, promote and organise the event, examples include promoting the event at Pride marches, local Bi+ groups around the country, hosting online quizzes and competitions. The founders of BiCamp were inspired by the LNBi, the Dutch National Network for Bisexuals. Our first UK BiCamp was held in 2018 and each year it has been held we've further developed it. As bisexual people in the UK often feel isolated within their LGBT+ communities, our goal is to offer a place where they can feel able to be themselves, meet new people and find friends around the UK and beyond. All BiCamp activities are run with the primary aim of inclusiveness and welcoming all members of the bi community and their partners/allies to get out into nature and improve wellbeing through activities and community building. BiCamp aims to address issues such as isolation and loneliness in the community, and over the years it has forged a huge number of friendships and connections amongst bi+ people, locally, nationally and internationally. We aim to provide a safe space for people to connect, whilst also specifically promoting bi inclusion in society by offering discounted tickets for those on low incomes, and free tickets for POC and those with extraordinary circumstances. 80 attendees came to BiCamp 2024, and the majority of tickets sold were in the lower cost brackets.
BiCamp UK CIC’s stakeholders are our attendees. We involve people experiencing other intersections, including disability and race, in all decisions relevant to that issue as well as in the general running of the organisation. A high percentage of our attendees and committee members are transgender, neurodiverse and/or disabled. We send out a questionnaire to attendees to identify any additional needs or support needed before camp, we have organisers identifiable by high-vis vests at the event and send out a feedback questionnaire post event. BiCamp was born as and still is a Community Led event; it relies on the active involvement of members to make it happen. The majority of events, activities and workshops are run by members. We have a volunteer timetable, which members can sign up for, including cleaning, cooking, looking after children, setting up tents, helping with camping and other supportive activities. Surveys go out before and after the event to ask community members what they want to see happening, what has gone well and what needs to be improved in the future, including what new activities should be included in the event. Our committee is entirely made up of LGBTQ+ individuals, and every camp member is expected to volunteer time during the event to ensure that camp runs smoothly. We collect extensive feedback before, during and after the event each year, and the committee is open to any attendee to join for the following year.
