Reconnect JA partnered with the Global Jamaican Diaspora Council UK South and Jamaicans Inspired to offer travel agent services to the UK-based Jamaican Diaspora wanting to attend the 10th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Montego Bay, Jamaica (June 2024) – directly supported 8 diasporans with travel and an additional 4 with guidance and support. Our founder, Reccarnei Philipson, was also a panellist at the conference for the ‘Strengthening Diaspora Youth Connection to Jamaica and Increasing a Sense of Jamaican Identity’ session. On June 20th, 2024, Reconnect JA collaborated with the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council (GJDYC) for the Diaspora Day of Service. Together, we organised a youth-led volunteering experience with Smilozone, a Jamaican waste management and recycling company dedicated to creating innovative solutions for environmental challenges. We spent the day sorting glass recycling, much of which comes from Jamaica’s hotel industry. As a team of 6, including 2 Reconnect JA team members, we sorted over 20 barrels of glass bottles in just a few hours. In October 2024, we held three Black History events, supporting residents of Southwark borough, as well as neighbouring boroughs, explore Black British-Caribbean identity and history. The events attracted over 100 people throughout all three sessions and helped to strengthen community engagement. In March 2025, Reconnect JA hosted a three-part Access to Excellence event series aimed at connecting Jamaican talent to world-class educational opportunities. This involved providing the opportunity for our community to learn more about Oxford and Cambridge as Jamaican Nationals, or UK nationals of Caribbean descent. Across the three events, participants were able to connect with representatives from University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, University of Glasgow, University College Birmingham, University of Technology and the University of the West Indies, Mona, allowing them to gain insights into: Applications, Entry requirements & College system Internal & External Scholarships Opportunities Student experience from Caribbean Students
