COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

NORTHERN CULTURAL PROJECTS (NCP) COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Company Number: 06532913 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 March 2025

Company activities and impact

Northern Cultural Projects CIC aims to foster transformative community history and culture in North East England. We deliver projects to give people agency and bring change from within. Activities are usually co-designed and produced with our diverse volunteer and freelance workforce and the communities we serve.Northern Cultural Projects continues to be a member of the Oral History Unit and Collective at Newcastle University, with the Executive Director being an Associate Researcher at the Unit. Our main project was "Paying Our Way: Research Participation and Fair Pay", funded by the Newcastle University Social Justice Fund, a research focused on fair remuneration and shared authority for research participants, particularly those with lived experience of economic disadvantage. Its recommendations for best practice included ensuring transparency about payment terms, offering proportionate compensation, consulting participants on their preferences, and developing clear institutional policies to support these ethical commitments. We also continued to work with Karbon Homes on a funding bid to bring one of the Byker housing estate ‘hobby rooms’ back into community use,as a community archive by and for the people who live on the estate.

Consultation with stakeholders

Because we are engaged in a wide range of diverse projects, we form steering groups for our larger projects, to ensure we have expert knowledge and advice on hand. Community projects and outputs are usually co-designed with participants and volunteers. This year we co-designed and -delivered the Paying Our Way project with with community researchers who all had experience of economic disadvantage.
