COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

REAL PHOTOGRAPHY CIC

Company Number: 10876520 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 July 2025

Company activities and impact

Darkroom use The Community Darkrooms experienced falling use of Darkrooms by members and users through the year. Darkroom Inductions were held every month with small groups, and beginners evening courses open to the public three times during the year, although numbers were down. We believed this was due to increased competition in Bristol with other darkrooms and analogue photography course providers affecting our business. Directors decided to tackle this with a big rebrand, renaming the Darkrooms as Bristol Community Darkrooms with a new membership scheme, new publicity, and a new website taking all bookings and payments online to make everything more streamlined. The new system and relaunch was developed and implemented over the spring and summer, 2025. We aim to attract new darkroom users and members from the photographic community in Bristol and beyond, provide accessible and affordable learning opportunities for all, and remain active as a thriving community asset in the heart of Bristol. Community Projects In Autumn 2024 we invited UWE (University of the West of England) students to volunteer with us and provided an 8 week Black and White Photography training course for all volunteers, both new and existing to refresh and update their skills and enable them to take an active part in future community projects. This project was funded by UWE under their Community Engagement Programme. Over the winter of 2024 we engaged five of our local primary schools in ten free science workshops funded by the Royal School of Chemistry for pupils to learn about light, light-sensitive materials and darkroom chemistry, and gain hands-on experience of pinhole photography and cyanotype printing.

Consultation with stakeholders

We continue to work closely with St Pauls Learning Centre management where the Darkrooms are based and continue to enjoy a supportive relationship with the Ethical Property Company. We discussed all aspects of the new booking and payment system with them to make sure they were on board with changes. We continue to ask all course and project participants to complete evaluation forms to give feedback on our activities to assist Directors in planning for future events, courses and workshops, ensuring we deliver what people want. Following our Volunteer Training Project in Autumn 2024, we were able to engage new volunteers from UWE and from the wider community. We offered volunteering opportunities helping out on workshops, projects and courses, with meetings for all volunteers to contribute ideas and feedback, and one of our volunteers stepped up to run a Festive Cyanotype Workshop of her own as a paid tutor.

Directors' remuneration

Directors’ Remuneration totalled £6,128.00 This was for teaching on courses, workshops and funded community projects carried out by Directors. All other work was carried out on a voluntary basis, including darkroom management and maintenance, conducting inductions, liaising with community groups and the Learning Centre, and publicity and web site development.

Transfer of assets

No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
