Company activities and impact

The main project that Lifestyle Health and Education embarked upon this year was a Community Craft Project which provided crafting sessions two afternoons per week for people living within the local area, who have mild autism and learning disabilities Each session has space for up to ten service users, plus their support worker or carers. and provides a safe space to create, socialise and be heard. Research shows that crafting is known to enhance mood and improve mental wellbeing. Over time some service users and the carers were able to express a significant increase in the confidence of the service user, and an eagerness to attend the weekly sessions. We were also able to signpost service users to other services in the area which could improve healthy lifestyles eg cookery classes and a walking project, specifically designed for people with autism and learning difficulties. The project has provided part-time employment for 7 people, and used the services of local shops to provide sandwiches fruit and refreshments for each session.

Consultation with stakeholders

Bi-monthly staff meetings were held where we obtained feedback from the support workers, and we were very open to suggestions to improve the delivery of the sessions. Towards the end of each crafting session the service users would have a "thankfulness session" in which they had the opportunity to express themselves. The feedback consistently included how much they enjoyed the sessions. Some spoke openly about how they looked forward to the crafting sessions. Some would go as far expressing attachment to certain staff members because they felt we cared. The service users frequently asked for materials to complete their craft at home. Occasionally materials were purchased to try the crafts at home.
