CANCER FITNESS COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Year Ending: 30 April 2025

Company activities and impact

The company runs exercise classes for cancer patients in the Southend on Sea and surrounding areas. The classes are open to any patient who: Is over 18 years of age Has a cancer diagnosis Is about to receive treatment; or Is receiving treatment; or Has recently finished treatment We have successfully applied for grant funding which enables us to keep our classes free to everyone up to a year post-treatment. After a year post-treatment we ask our members for a voluntary donation to assist with the running costs of our classes. We also engage in fundraising activity to further supplement our income. Both Claire and Francesca have been involved with cancer exercise and fitness for more than 5 years, and we have seen first hand the benefits, both physical and psychological, that exercise can bring. Improved physical fitness can reduce the risk of a recurrence of cancer, improve bone density and strength, and reduce the impact of anxiety and depression. Our classes create a safe environment where attendees can make new friends, ask for advice and increase social connections. In the last year, over 100 people have attended our classes.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are those living with a cancer diagnosis in the Southend on Sea area. Our exercise classes are open to those patients who have been referred to us by a health care professional. Our Cancer Fitness programme benefits the community by supporting patients’ physical health, and also by strengthening psychosocial well-being across the entire support network. When our patient group who are affected by cancer participate in the tailored exercise sessions, they often experience reduced anxiety, improved mood, and a renewed sense of control during an otherwise overwhelming time. Our programme creates safe spaces where survivors, and those receiving cancer treatment, can connect with others who understand their experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and fostering meaningful social bonds. As confidence grows and participants regain energy and independence, they often reengage more fully in community life. In this way, our cancer fitness initiatives are helping to build healthier, more resilient communities.

Directors' remuneration

Two of our directors, Claire and Francesca, receive coaching fees for each class that they run. During the period to 30th April 2025 the total amount paid was £12,907.
