The Children’s Photography Archive C.I.C. (CPA for short) is a not-for-profit online digital archive that serves the interests of children and young people, their visual heritage, and their role as documentors of their everyday lives, history, and social change, as well as creators of artistic work. Our mission is to create an ethical infrastructure for the collection and preservation of children’s photography internationally and to develop ways in which to involve children and young people in archiving of their visual culture through education and training of cultural workers. Building on previous years’ focus on developing strong governance and operational structures, notable activities for our fourth year August 1 2024 to July 31 2025 in this respect includes, joining the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, February 28, 2025; NCVO member ID MEMBER 33561. Appointing honorary counsel through Law Works to audit our policies. The legal firm Morgan Lewis & Bockius LLP will be working with the Children’s Photography Archive for the next three years. In October 2024, we received a small grant from the European Union that has enabled us to develop collaborations and engage in public facing work. The CPA co-curated the children’s submission to the Chennai Photo Biennale IV Edition which took place in Chennai from January to March 2025. As well as exhibiting selected children’s photographs from our own collections, we worked with our partner organization to show over 200 children’s photographic work from 20 community arts projects around the world. The exhibition attracted visitors from Chennai including many local school children.
The company’s stakeholders are children and young people, and professionals who work with them. The director is an experienced researcher who has worked with children and young people for over 20 years, and the CPA has taken a child-centred approach in its design from the outset. All our activities and actions have been designed with in-depth research knowledge of children and young people’s lives and in particular, the absence of meaningful photographic preservation of those lives. We have not carried a direct consultation with children and young people yet. Given that the archive works on behalf of minors and that our community of children and young people is distributed and dispersed (i.e., we are not working with a place-based group), we are taking some time to develop meaningful ways of involving children and young people in our work that benefits them and which reduces consultation burden on them. In terms of professionals that we seek to serve, membership to our advisory group which has been set up from the outset, represents key areas of activity including but not limited to legal dimensions of the CPA (copyright and IP), digital infrastructure, art history, and creative practice. The advisory group meets once a year, typically in January, and members are available to the direct on an ad hoc basis to support her.
