DAiSY is an umbrella organisation that promotes and celebrates the work of disabled and d/Deaf artists and disability arts organisations across Surrey. Through a coordinated annual programme of artistic, professional development and networking activity, DAiSY works to strengthen the disability arts ecology in the South East and to make Surrey a welcoming, accessible and inclusive place for all artists to practise. During the financial year, DAiSY’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways: Increased access to arts and culture: DAiSY delivered a year-round programme of exhibitions, commissions and public-facing events across Surrey, ensuring that disabled and d/Deaf artists’ work was visible, valued and accessible to local audiences, including communities that are often underrepresented in mainstream cultural provision. Support for disabled and d/Deaf artists’ careers: Over 90 independent disabled artists were supported through professional development opportunities including mentoring, commissions, networking events and paid work opportunities, helping to reduce barriers to employment and progression within the arts sector. Strengthening local arts organisations: DAiSY worked closely with its 22 member organisations across Surrey, supporting collaboration, skills-sharing and joint programming. This has strengthened organisational resilience and improved the quality and accessibility of cultural provision across the county. Economic benefit to the local creative sector: DAiSY’s commissioning, training and programme delivery generated paid opportunities for artists, freelancers and facilitators, contributing to the local creative economy and supporting disabled practitioners to earn income from their practice. Improved inclusion and accessibility: By embedding access from the outset of all activities, DAiSY has supported venues, partners and artists to improve inclusive practice, benefiting disabled audiences, participants and cultural workers across Surrey. Community building and wellbeing: DAiSY’s networking events and collective programmes have reduced isolation for disabled and d/Deaf artists, fostered peer support, and created safer, welcoming spaces for creative exchange and shared learning. Through these activities, DAiSY continues to play a vital role in developing the South East as a leading region for disability and d/Deaf cultural activity, while delivering clear social, cultural and economic benefits to the local community.
