The Community Grub Hub is a CIC set up for the benefit of the community, namely the provision of food. The Community Store is open to local residents one day a week to provide food, household products and hygiene items as well as access to wraparound services for advice and support. The Community Store itself is set up like a shop, enabling residents to pick items of food from the shelves and the fridge and freezer themselves. CGH now routinely distributes over 1,500 kg of food to an average of 230 households every week, with about 1,800 families from the Rushmoor catchment area registered to access our services. However, we don’t just want to provide food; we really want to help individuals to get back on their feet, stabilise and progress with their lives. In order to support this, we have just opened the HelpHub. At the HelpHub we will be able to provide advice on a range of issues including health, housing, debt, benefits, CV writing and job hunting. We hope that these services will help individuals and families to reduce their dependency on CGH and thrive in our community.
Residents do not need a formal referral to the Community Store and are signed up upon their first visit, this includes the resident sitting with a volunteer and filling in a simple form that takes some key information, such as the postcode of the resident and the makeup of their household. Residents are then given a loyalty card to use on subsequent visits, this enables us to track how often residents are using the Community Store and enables us to provide other support and advice. Residents that need access to other services are able to be signposted by volunteers , some residents are able to access help and advice right away, without the need for formal referrals or appointments. We currently have over 30 volunteers that help at the Community Store, they have received training . They are a very important part of the team and it would not be possible to run without their help. The Community Store is managed by the Store Manager, who works closely with the volunteers to make sure that residents are able to access food and other support, if necessary, as well as maintain the administration of the project. Food is provided to the Community Grub Hub in a number of ways, including donations from local organisations and businesses, supermarkets and the general public. Currently, our main source of food is from Fareshare, a food waste organisation that distributes food that is destined for landfill to organisation that sign up to use their service.
