Nutrition Advice for Health (NafHealth) is a community interest not for profit company set up to offer nutritional education programs for weight loss, wellness and an improved health to community at large. Benefits of our services to the community includes: - -Reducing overweight and obesity, weight loss, improved health (reduction in High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Type 2 diabetes and other degenerative diseases that are linked to nutrition and obesity such as sleep apnoea, depression (a mental health disease) and some cancers) - The opportunity to understand basic nutrition and ability to learn how to cook healthy meals for self and whole family. - our group activities help form community cohesion - Improve fitness through physical activities.
The company's stakeholders are community of people that seek wellness through nutrition and physical activities; - Includes - People that are obese, overweight or and with incidence of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, High Blood pressure - Black Asian Minority Ethnic group - Local residence of Thurrock and Essex wide. Our community has been involved in the project's developments Thurrock has the highest overweight and obese population in the country, a rate of 76.3%. Moreover, this epidemic is more prevalent in the Black and Asian communities. Our idea for our programmes was sparked by an in-depth study conducted by our local council, the Thurrock Joint Needs Assessment in Whole Systems Obesity. This research found that those from Black and Minority Ethnic groups were observed to have higher rates of obesity and excess weight and recommended that more relevant methods of engagement and focus are needed. Among those most predominantly target women between ages 12-65. While our group is open to all and involves men and individuals of various abilities and ethnic backgrounds, we have prioritised this group due to the influence this population has on the community. By targeting this demographic, we will provide women with nutritional education that can be imparted to their wider families, particularly their children, so that we have a preventative impact on obesity for our future community. Through our independent qualitative study which involved approximately 100 local participants, we found that 90% of the respondents reported that they did not feel supported or able to participate in initiatives developed by local authorities due to a lack of consideration for cultural differences concerning food and lifestyle. For example With this knowledge, we began the Walk with Us- Eat Better, Eat Cheaper initiative in February 2023, following virtual and in-person interviews with 23 participants who felt they did not have accessible health services - services where they felt welcome, unjudged, and supported. We are providing these services by creating the group, where we have fostered a sense of community and motivation that we hope to continue with your support.
