Company activities and impact

Cornwall Marine Academy (CMA) was created in 2008 to respond to a rising need within Marine businesses for more employable and better skilled Young People to enter the local workforce. The CMA achieves this by offering careers advice to Young People, improving employability prospects and ensures a growing number of Young People gain meaningful vocational work experience to support their employability and progression onto further education, an Apprenticeship or a job. In April 2018, the CMA was incorporated as a Community Interest Company (C.I.C.) enabling new project funds to be accessed to strengthen the work of the CMA. Over the past year the CMA team has: Won the Maritime UK’s Future Skills Award 2025 (also won in 2019) which means we have been awarded the title of the best Maritime Education Training Provider in the UK for Services Delivered to Young People. Utilised CMN team members to provide support with financial support (invoicing and cash flow) and Marketing advice to help grow our social media reach (particularly Linked In.) Continue to support unemployed adults (over 100 this year) across Cornwall with physical disabilities following the merging of this activity from an existing CMN team into the CMA.The CMA promoted the Senior Manager into a Director role who continues to provide a lead on CIC activity, including developing new commercial income for the CIC to become fully self-sustainable. Purchased additional marketing collateral (new pull up banners). A number of new fee-paying services continue to be created by the CMA Education & Training Development Manager to strengthen CIC training delivery in both Secondary and Primary schools. In addition, CMA is delivering to the wider community across Cornwall and have expanded into Plymouth schools. Continued to deliver x10 Employability Skills courses in topics including: Understanding Contracts, Job Market Information, Online Presence, Transferable Skills & Personal Qualities, Developing Health, Wellbeing & Emotional Resilience to a wider range of schools and stakeholders than in previous years. Expanded on content and delivered (to an extended network of schools) a new 'Prepare to Earn' programme aimed at those 14-18 year olds that are unsure which career pathway they will want to progress into following their school education. The programme is flexible to meet strict school timetable demands. We are bringing young people and businesses closer together with the aim of gaining an Apprenticeship. 35 OCN units (Level 1 and Level 2) have been developed. The course was partially EU funded and partial funded commercially, so will help with self-sustainability of the CIC moving forward. We have successfully engaged with larger volumes of people through our social media channels. We continue to train volunteer Marine Ambassadors to ensure they are equipped with how to deal/ interact with young people. We now have 106 Marine ambassadors. CMA continues to work closely with local secondary schools, with 25 secondary schools and x10 Primary schools now engaged in commissioning delivery to young people. Gained x2 sponsors from local businesses to the total of £21,000 to help us deliver a Pre-Apprenticeship Programme (Prepare to Earn) to 48 students across 4 Cornish Secondary Schools. Launched new programmes with Cornwall Council, which will increase our income significantly and grow our support to young people across Cornwall who need our support most. Created the ‘CMA Way’ which is brand and identify that helps show stakeholders that we have mapped our offer accordingly. Successfully won a tender for Falmouth University’s Immersive Team to help create online VR Marine careers promotional videos on a CMA App. The next step is to grow our contracts with additional schools, grow our delivery services and secure some new business sponsorship to reduce costs to schools to expand the model. Collectively this will grow fee-paying income for the CMA. CMA Director continues to support a number of local organisations in a voluntary capacity to help ensure that we are growing our networks and it is enabling us to grow our income (including, Cornwall Council’s EBP team, Cornwall Council, CMN Networking events with member businesses, Wooden Spoon Cornwall, Falmouth Town Council). Several careers fairs and education events have taken place in schools to promote Marine careers. Going forward CMA will: Continue to develop opportunities for additional commercial activities and implement delivery to earn this income. Continue to build relationships with Secondary schools and look at sourcing funding through both Secondary and Primary schools. Continue to develop wider relationships with Job Centres across Cornwall and promote CMA services through a procurement (that we have won during 2025) from Job Centres so that they can pay us to deliver. Develop and utilise resources and projects available. Continue to produce provision for any identified gaps/ new product innovation. Successfully complete delivery on existing contracts (SPF’s People Hub Programme and start on the new Connect to Work Programme from January 26). Identify any gaps and wrap-around support needed together with looking at other funding for people not currently supported. Look to recruit additional Freelance Tutors to aid the growth in delivery with the Cornwall Council referrals. Secure further business sponsorship to help fund our staff team to continue to deliver curriculum and activities post EU funding. Launch the CMA Advisory Board (Stakeholders and to represent Young People). Separate the accounts from CMN to CMA and become a self-sustainable business. Our ultimate aim is to expand our range of provision for 14-24 year olds and deliver fee-paying activities in order to be fully self-sustainable.

Consultation with stakeholders

Consultation is an ongoing inherent activity and part of our continuous improvement initiative that sees learner feedback and feedback from schools used to inform ongoing developments and improvements to existing and new services. CMA is developing its Governance structure - to include; Regular Board meetings with accountability from Directors Look at representation from Industry, communities and young people
