We continued to run two workshop venues, our main one, Bike Hub Central at St Martin’s Place in central Brighton, and our subsidiary space, Bike Hub East at the Big Lemon bus yard in Kemp Town. Our central workshop was, as ever, a busy and vibrant space, opening five days per week, Tuesday to Saturday, with two shifts each day. We managed to have three to four team members working most shifts and there was always plenty to do, with a steady stream of customers wanting support. In an average week we helped out 62 people, with 32 customer bike repairs as well as refurbishing and selling 10 bikes. In a typical week we received 16 donated bikes, about 6 more than we sold, about 20% of these would be stripped down, with useful parts salvaged for use on other bikes, and the rest sent for recycling. Such used parts are an important part of our service, as we offer these to customers for a donation, helping people on a budget to maintain their bikes affordably. During an average week we sold 23 used parts as well as 43 new parts. These could be anything from tyres & wheels, to pedals and saddles or locks and lights. A total of over 800 bikes were donated during the year. Most of these were delivered by supporters to our workshop, however about 300 had to be collected as it was not always possible for donors to deliver. Our catchment area for such donations now covers much of East & West Sussex with collections from as far afield as Hastings, Eastbourne, Haywards Heath, Hurspierpoint and Worthing as well as Brighton, Hove, Portslade and Lewes. A daily ritual at the Bike Hub is wheeling numerous bikes out of the workshop each morning and back in at the end of the day to create sufficient space to work. Often the huge numbers of bikes would become unmanageable, so several times each month we ran loads of 6-10 bikes over to our second workshop, Bike Hub East, in Kemp Town.
As has been the trend during recent years, we increased our links with communities and organisations across the city and beyond by running stalls and ‘Dr Bike’ sessions at events and by developing partnerships to organise events and initiate new and joint projects. In September we also held an open day where we invited representatives from the City Council and both universities to find out more about what we do and how we work. Among othe guests was Cllr Trevor Muten, the councils Cabinet member for transport.
The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifying services was £ 42,874. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclosed.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
