Positive Steps Outdoors' (PSO) mission is to 'Facilitate self care by enabling people to escape to outdoor destinations, engaging in ‘green therapy’ collectively to benefit their mental and physical wellbeing". During this reporting period we have: Green Therapy Programmes and Healthy Hikes Collaborated with the Public Health Agency, charities and businesses as well as the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service to design and deliver tailored green therapy programmes at iconic destinations. Benefitted participants by promoting positive mental health, introducing them to new locations, and providing knowledge for independent exploration. Advocacy and Awareness for Outdoor Well-being Delivered talks at conferences and a series of media video clips in cooperation with Social Enterprise NI highlighting the link between mental health and outdoor activities. Educated well-being leads on how to include green therapy in workplace initiatives, aligning with the Public Health Agency’s ‘Take 5 Steps to Well-being’ framework. Youth Mental Health Partnership Continuing to partner with Young Social Innovators (YSI) to develop a mental health programme for young people as part of the Ignite Community Programme, supported by PEACEPLUS and managed by SEUPB. Social Media and Awareness Campaigns Continued to build on our awareness campaign promoting outdoor activities as a tool for improving mental health.
Engaging with Stakeholders Positive Steps Outdoors (PSO) actively engages with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure our services meet the needs of individuals, organisations, and communities. Key stakeholder groups include: Well-being Leads – From local employers, charities, and community groups. Programme Participants – Individuals from partner organisations who attend our events. Mental Health Supporters – Charities and professionals working in mental health and well-being. How We Engage Collaborative Service Design: We work directly with well-being leads and mental health supporters to understand the needs of those they support, identify barriers to participation, and adapt our services to maximise inclusion and impact. Business and Sector Workshops: Participated in seminars and workshops hosted by employer networks and business groups to promote green therapy and listen to the challenges and priorities of workplace well-being leads. Community Well-being Conferences: Took part in community-based well-being conferences sponsored by local authorities, health trusts, and statutory health bodies. These events provided valuable opportunities to engage directly with professionals and service users to raise awareness of nature-based approaches to mental health. Participant Feedback and Evaluation: Gathered structured feedback from attendees using evaluation forms and the Edinburgh Warwick Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS). Results have consistently shown improvements in well-being, demonstrating the positive impact and effectiveness of our programmes. How Stakeholder Input Has Improved Our Services Feedback and engagement have led to clear improvements, including: Location Planning – Selecting venues that are accessible, appealing, and suited to community needs. Inclusive Programming – Tailoring activities to suit the fitness levels and confidence of participants. Mindfulness Integration – Including light-touch mindfulness sessions run by qualified practitioners. Removing Participation Barriers – Partnering with an outdoor retailer to provide equipment for those who may otherwise be unable to take part.
