RADIO COWDENBEATH CIC

Directors' report period ended 31 March 2025

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 March 2025

Principal activities of the company

The principal activity of Radio Cowdenbeath CIC is to build and maintain an online community radio station serving the people of Cowdenbeath in Fife, Scotland and the surrounding towns and villages. In this year, the group has focussed on gradually raising our profile through a number of means to reach new audiences and engage them on the news, information and music that we believe they’ll enjoy. Our community news content reached news audiences this year through more than 20 written articles, with more than 55,000 views across our main social and website pages. Our followers increased by 240% in the year, with 64% of those from the Cowdenbeath locality. Our interactions were up 320% across our social media pages too, indicating strong positive engagement with our content. Our most read stories included: - Falling street lamps in the High Street - Pavement parking ban introduced in Cowdenbeath - Cowdenbeath’s final bank branch closing Our most downloaded content from our website was our interview with Neale Hanvey during our live election coverage. Hanvey was the former Alba MP for Cowdenbeath & Kirkcaldy. We had readers and visitors from over 40 countries engaging with content on our website, with the top 10 locations being: 1 - UK 2 - US 3 - Ireland 4 - Germany 5 - Canada 6 - Sweden 7 - Spain 8 - Australia 9 - Netherlands 10 - Poland During the UK General Election, we produced a number of interviews from the local Fife count centre in Glenrothes, with a live news story as the count unfolded locally and nationally, which offered people in Cowdenbeath a local perspective on a national political story. Throughout the year we continued discussions with a number of community partners and individuals on how the station can support life here in Cowdenbeath. This includes discussions with BRAG Enterprises on the possibility of radio station studios being part of the proposed Cowdenbeath Town House redevelopment, and we hope to become tenants in the new buildings in late 2026 if funding is confirmed for this exciting project being delivered by BRAG. Other community work included our membership of the Cowdenbeath Emergency Resilience Group, where we improved messaging around the Red Alert for Storm Eowyn in January and also during several power cuts in the area. We also secured some surplus furniture from the demolition of Woodmill High School in Dunfermline, which was donated to Knights Templar Goodwill Charity Scotland for their Cowdenbeath office, and we attended the Cowdenbeath Xmas Fayre to raise funds for the organisation.

For our on-air content, we have focussed our activity into on-air branding, teaming up with a national jingle producer for our professional on-air sonic branding and identity. Our live music stream has been online for more than 12 months now, playing music and public service adverts, all via our website thanks to streaming service SAM Broadcaster. All of these activities help us achieve our aim of making Cowdenbeath a more connected place through engaging with our community radio station and its content.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Directors continue to consult with a range of community stakeholders throughout the year, including Cowdenbeath Community Council, Fife Council, elected representatives, local businesses, funders and the wider community. We achieve this through meetings, website content and posts on social media, which had a total reach of over 55,000 in 2024/25.
