Architecture for Kids CIC is a registered Community Interest Company whose principal activity is to engage children and young people in the design and understanding of the built environment. The company operates with the objective of promoting creativity, confidence, and critical thinking among young people by involving them as active participants and co-designers in architectural and urban projects. Our programmes are structured to provide hands-on learning experiences through site visits, drawing, model-making, and collaborative workshops. These activities are designed to ensure that children and young people are empowered to make informed decisions and ex-press their ideas, thereby fostering inclusivity and diversity in the built environment. During the financial year, the company delivered several key initiatives that have generated measurable community benefit: - Soho Kids Xmas Lights – Now in its fifth year, this project was co-designed with So-ho Parish Primary School and co-produced with RIBA Learning, the National Gallery, Westminster Council, and the Soho community. It enabled pupils to create illuminated panels for Soho’s festive display, exploring themes of place-making, migration, and sustainability. - Cardiff Kids Xmas Lights – Initiated in 2024 with secured funding for three years from Floodlighting Electrical Ltd, this project engages pupils from St. Cuthbert Primary School and Tredegarville C.I.W. Primary School in the co-design of festive panels for Cardiff’s Canal Quarter. Delivery partners include Cardiff Council, the Royal Society of Architects in Wales, Atkins Realis Engineering, and the local community. - Little Investigators – Delivered in partnership with the Built Environment Trust, this programme reached 450 primary school pupils across ten London boroughs, encouraging them to investigate and reflect on their local surroundings. - Architecture for Kids Podcast – Co-produced with the Built Environment Trust, Thornton Education Trust, and the Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University, the podcast provides a platform for practitioners and creatives to share insights on making the built environment more inclusive and sustainable. Through these activities, Architecture for Kids CIC has contributed to community development by strengthening local engagement, promoting cultural awareness, and empowering the next generation to participate actively in shaping their environments.
Stakeholders of Architecture for Kids CIC include: - Children and young people participating in programmes - Schools and educators involved in project delivery - Parents and families of participating pupils - Community organizations and local residents - Local authorities and councils (e.g., Westminster Council, Cardiff Council) - Professional partners and collaborators (e.g., RIBA Learning, Built Environment Trust, Thornton Education Trust, Atkins Realis Engineering) - Funding bodies and sponsors Consultation Methods: The company engages stakeholders through structured and informal mechanisms, including: - Planning meetings with schools and local authorities prior to project implementation - Interactive workshops where pupils and teachers provide real-time feedback - Post-project evaluations via feedback forms and debrief sessions with partner organizations - Community engagement events during public installations (e.g., Soho and Cardiff festive light projects) - Ongoing dialogue with professional partners through collaborative forums and pod-cast discussions Actions Taken in Response to Feedback: - Extended workshop duration and adapted content following teacher recommendations to allow deeper engagement - Incorporated pupil-led themes such as migration and sustainability based on class-room discussions - Improved accessibility of materials and resources after feedback from parents and schools - Strengthened local partnerships and co-production models in response to community requests for greater involvement Through these consultations, Architecture for Kids CIC ensures that its programmes remain inclusive, relevant, and responsive to the needs of children, educators, and communities.
