Bradford South Asian Heritage Forum CIC was incorporated in March 2024 and this is the company’s first year of operation and first statutory report. During the financial year, the company delivered a programme of community-focused creative and cultural activities designed to celebrate, share and promote the cultural, heritage and artistic contributions of the South Asian diaspora to life in the UK, with a particular focus on Bradford, Bradford District and West Yorkshire. The company’s activities aimed to bring people together through accessible and inclusive cultural events. Events were designed to be affordable and, in most cases, free to attend, ensuring that participation was not limited by financial barriers, particularly during the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. All activities were open to people of all backgrounds, faiths and identities, supporting community cohesion and mutual understanding. The company’s principal activity during the year was the Bradford South Asian Festival, a three-day cultural weekender held in August 2024. The festival delivered 13 individual activities across the weekend, including creative, cultural and community engagement events. In addition to the main festival, the company delivered a further four activities throughout the year, linked to festival promotion, community engagement and outreach work. In total, the company delivered 17 individual activities during the financial year. A further strand of the company’s work is Little Foodies, a children’s food-focused programme that encourages young people to engage positively with one another through cooking and food culture. These activities promoted healthy eating, environmental responsibility and social harmony, encouraging children to eat fresh and wholesome food, share dishes and culinary traditions across different heritage backgrounds, reduce reliance on takeaways, and understand the wider environmental and health impacts of food choices. The company’s activities benefited communities across Bradford District by creating opportunities for families, young people and individuals of all ages to come together in shared creative and cultural spaces. Attendance reflected a broad and diverse mix of participants, with approximately 60% of attendees identifying as being from South Asian backgrounds and around 40% from other backgrounds, demonstrating the inclusive and cross-community reach of the company’s work. Overall, the company delivered community benefit by providing fun, inclusive and accessible cultural activities that encouraged creativity, improved wellbeing, strengthened community relationships and promoted greater understanding between different communities.
Consultation with stakeholders took place on an ongoing and proportionate basis during the financial year. The company engaged informally with community members, participants, families, artists, facilitators, volunteers and partner organisations involved in its activities, primarily through conversations at events, discussions before and after activities, and ongoing dialogue with those involved in delivery. Feedback gathered through this engagement informed the design, accessibility and content of activities, ensuring that programmes remained relevant, inclusive and responsive to community needs. The company intends to continue developing its consultation and feedback processes as it grows.
Directors did not receive any remuneration, salary or fees in their capacity as directors during the financial year. However, the company commissions freelance practitioners to deliver specific activities and events, and on occasion a director may have been commissioned on a freelance basis to deliver particular activities. Any such payments were made solely for freelance delivery work and were not connected to the individual’s role as a director. Directors may also have received payment for out of pocket expenses incurred during delivery of events. In this particular year, directors only received payments for expenses incurred.
