COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

NORTH HIGHLANDS & ISLANDS CLIMATE HUB CIC

Company Number: SC729597 (Scotland)

Year Ending: 31 March 2025

Company activities and impact

The company supports communities in Highland, Orkney and Shetland to take climate action both mitigation and adaptation actions. We do this through supporting capacity building within community groups, hosting events and activities and direct one to one support with community groups. During the period of 1st May 2024 to 31st March 2025 we benefitted the communities of Highland, Orkney and Shetland through: - Provision of 27 events and training sessions delivered to communities on themes ranging from non-climate related training (Funding and Communications) to peer support skill shares which were climate mitigation themed (energy, repair & reuse) and local place planning and in person community learning exchanges. - Worked collaboratively with local authorities and delivered 5 additional workshops on local place planning through a climate lens, - Supported 23 communities in our sustainable spaces programme which assists community buildings to reach net zero targets. - Awarded grant funding totalling £20,390 to 63 community groups. - Directly supported through 1:1 support 67 community organisations with advice on project development, funding, technical enquiries and peer support advice - Supported 24 members of the community to obtain climate leadership accredited training - Worked with 9 communities in Highland, Orkney and Shetland to create local place plans which are climate proofed. - Supported the formation of a Youth Climate Network across Highland, Orkney and Shetland. - Developed a number of resources on both climate and non-climate related themes, filling a perceived gap where no similar resources existed in terms of capacity building support such as finance, marketing and communications, health & safety, sustainable spaces, communicating climate and planning sustainable events. - Delivered the Highlands & Islands Climate Festival reaching communities across Highland, Orkney and Shetland with 121 events, with 3678 participants ensuring coverage of events across the region of 85% of local authority wards.

Consultation with stakeholders

The companies direct stakeholders are the members of the North Highlands & Islands Climate Hub. During the period the company had 358 members across the region. 85 were individual members and the 273 were organisational members - community groups. Those members shape the activities of the Hub from identifying their training needs and the hub then providing training to fill those needs to applications for grant funding. We regularly consult those members through 1:1 support, surveys and event feedback to shape the services that we provide. For example, our annual survey identified that community groups needed additional support in applying for grant funding and with communications. We therefore developed and delivered training in communications most notably how to promote their activities on social media and also provided a funding masterclass to community groups. Leadership training was identified in our annual survey which reached all members and was a key priority of 83% of respondents. Therefore working with the Social Enterprise Academy we provided leadership training and continue to support leaders on their leadership journey. Our additional stakeholders are local authorities in our region, regional and national support agencies and through working with them to identify further needs in communities we were able to partner on workshops to assist communities in local place planning, sharing their voices to policies, legislation and plans. Form a Youth Climate Network and support educational work.
