WOODLANDS FOR THE TREES COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY

Directors' report period ended 31 March 2025

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 March 2025

Principal activities of the company

Thought leadership: * The blog on our website (www.woodsforthetrees.org) is where we share news of our activities and advice about planting trees. * During this period, we published 11 blog posts from various contributors. * One of our most popular blogs was about the dilemma of tree shelters, which was followed up with a successful TikTok video that gained 38.4k views. * Max Adams gave 3 talks about his books during this period: In April and December 2024 on “Museum of the Wood Age” and in January 2025 on “Trees of Life”. Projects: * We were busy at our three main planting sites during FY04. In Thistle Wood and South Field in County Durham, 400 new trees were planted. In Hassocks, West Sussex, 80 trees were planted in a single day in October 2024. * South Field was also given a leaky dam and a pond, both of which will attract wildlife such as dragonflies, newts, frogs and water fowl. Thistle Wood also gained a new pond. * At Thistle Wood, a bird survey confirmed that it is now home to two red list threatened species of bird - grasshopper warblers and willow tits. Seven bee hives have also been established there. * Queen’s Park School, Brighton continued to be our busiest Nuts for the Trees school. Year 3 gathered and planted nuts, which we hope to plant out as saplings in the coming year. Partnerships: * Netherton Moss Primary School in Bootle, Liverpool became our newest Nuts for the Trees school in September 2024. They joined Queen’s Park School, Brighton and Ashley C of E Primary School in Walton-on-Thames. * Our partnership with landowner Nick Coppard is going from strength to strength. We have planted on his farm for the last two years and we’re planning another planting in FY05. * Max Adams joined the board of Underwood, the North East England Coppice Group, and continues to be a member of the Small Woods Association.

Additional information

Raising awareness of Woods for the Trees: * Social media remains our principal medium for raising awareness of Woods for the Trees. * During our 4th year of business, we boosted our presence on social media. We took the decision to leave X (Twitter) as the directors felt the channel and its audience were not compatible with our ethos. However, we joined Bluesky, Threads and TikTok. * At the end of this financial year, our followers on each channel were: * WFTT Instagram - 941 followers * Bluesky - 145 * LinkedIn - 111 * Threads - 107 * Facebook - 87 * Thistle Wood Instagram - 40 followers * TikTok - 25 * WFTT newsletter - 84 subscribers * Two new newsletters were sent out in Spring and Autumn 2024, promoting and linking to the new content on our blog. Revenue streams: * Our main revenue stream continues to be our range of gift cards, which can be redeemed for a tree sponsorship certificate. * During FY04, we sold 28 cards, producing a revenue of £420. * This included a new card added to the range - the Green Man gift card featuring an illustration by Morgan Davies. * In this period, 9 cards were redeemed and certificates sent. This equates to a 32% redemption rate, but we’re happy with that because the sales have been made anyway!
