Jagat Gamelan is a community music group that practices Javanese and Balinese Gamelan in a term format usually concluding with a performance. We have rehearsed over many different venues including the Indonesian Embassy, SOAS University, and since owning our own Balinese Gamelan set; experienced a long pause of practice since losing funding and not having enough self funds to pay for a teacher. In the year window we were able to commence group practices after around 2 years of not having the funding to pay the teacher. Through a community agreed new membership fee and classes resumed for a full term and had enjoyed seeing new membership join and take up the instrument. We were able to perform at the Telegraph Hill community festival as a group.
In the form of a meeting with the community membership and prospective new members; we consulted them as stakeholders. We discussed new membership fee to be able to afford a teacher and also group goals for performance at the Telegraph Hill festival in September 2022 which did commence in 2023. Members were consulted on changes to day of practice and time of practice to facilitate new member joins that might be on different time structures. The group wanted to stay put in South East London on its typical day. This has been an ongoing conversation in the group.
