Company activities and impact

Foxhole Community Garden CIC was established on 13 May 2015 to bring the disused Foxhole Garden back into use as a therapeutic garden where members of the local community could access volunteer opportunities, learn about growing food, parent and toddler groups, courses and opportunities to be outside, learning about growing organic food and cooking. Following site surveys, planning and a consultation with the local community we received funding to start to landscape the garden and run open and volunteer days. Work to make the garden site accessible commenced on February 2016. Over the period 2024-25 the companies activities have benefited the community in the following ways. Hosted 60 families per week attend our parent and toddler groups for forest school activities, eating fresh cooked produce and taking away fresh organic produce. Running a weekly volunteer day provided support for regular volunteers who, because of mental or physical health problems have not been able to volunteer elsewhere. These volunteers learn about growing veg, help prepare and eat a lunch from the garden and are able to take away fresh produce for cooking at home. Worked with Unison and Torbay and South Devon NHS trust to offer World of Wellbeing to NHS and Unison members. This is a 4 week therapeutic horticulture event supporting public services. Over the year we ran 8 of these events with up to 12 people per group. The garden was available and used by local community organisations and members of the local community for a number of birthday parties and meetings. We launched at low cost Saturday morning with a total of 30 local people joining each month for 9 months to learn about regenerative and ecological gardening and growing food, flowers and herbs. Opened in October for a Harvest Festival day and welcomed over 150 local people to explore the garden and engage in activities. During this period we also focused on propagating and selling at low cost plants for veg and flowers to support local gardeners and those becoming interested in gardening.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our main stakeholders are residents of the local area and also families and residents who travel from the Paignton and Torbay area to access the garden. We held an initial questionnaire consultation which received over 90 responses. In this we asked people what they would like to see happen at the garden and what changes would benefit the local community. Our subsequent development of the garden was based on this consultation, which remains open. We have an email database of nearly 500 people who wish to be kept informed about events at the garden. We use social media to keep people updated about events at the garden where they can email, phone or message us if they have comments or suggestions. We also regularly have meetings with specific groups who may wish to use the garden (detailed above) and have plans to put in place an outreach programme letting local children’s services, schools and care facilities know about the garden.
