Core activities: The company’s core activities provide access to safe sanitation services for people living on canal and river boats in central london who do not have access to sewered sanitation. We also contribute to a healthy physical environment, through reduced cross-contamination of black Canal and River Trust bins (and other municipal waste bins), reduced mis-use of Elsan Points and a reduction in pollution incidents as caused via water-based sewered sanitation processes. In the past financial year we have continued to collect over a 10 tonnes of dry material (faeces) in order for it to be processed anaerobically into ‘soil conditioner’, diverting a considerable amount of material from entering the over-loaded, polluting sewage system. Employment and volunteer activities from within the community we serve: We have continued to employ within the boating community: 1 paye roles and 3x freelance roles. We also run a popular volunteer scheme in which folk are able to access to the paid service for free in exchange for approx. 2 hours of their time monthly. This scheme allows us to be as financially accessible as possible to the community we serve whilst also supporting participants to develop their skillset and help shape a grass-roots project from the inside-out.
The governance of our Community Interest Company is co-operatively organised. Our key stakeholders are our customers and the London canal community. We hold ‘community’ meetings on an approx. quarterly basis. At these meetings we review progress, listen to feedback, discuss and share ideas for the direction of the organisation. We also spent the last financial year preparing a programme of ‘skill-sharing’ workshops/sessions in collaboration with other organisations who support our vision and values on topics related to sustainable living on the canals, which we are in the process of rolling out in subsequent months. We also run online surveys for our customers to provide feedback. We continue to work closely with the Canal and River Trust, the charitable organisation who manage the waterways we operate on. They have provided their explicit support re. our work and the importance of it continuing.
