In collecting stories from elders to make sense of their lived experiences, founders at the Making of Black Britain (MoBB) realised many stories are at risk of being lost. A CIC was formed to capture/document the everyday of everyone; every colour, class, and creed, across generations – the real people who make up Britain today. MoBB provides a vehicle to reach across communities, sharing untold stories and providing insight into the making of Black Britain, part of a much wider, uniquely British story. MoBB’s pilot project developed processes to support a new community outreach model that builds an oral history archive. MoBB is focused on building bridges and rooting the project in the community through libraries to tackle loneliness/isolation, skill shortage, digital poverty, and provide a platform for unheard voices, creative employment/career pathways, and diversity in archives. We have created a platform in partnership with Google Arts & Culture to raise the profile of the everyday voices of Britain locally and globally, so communities that would not usually connect can better understand each other. We have seen a demand from communities to engage other generations and diasporas to better understand themselves so they can heal. Ongoing partnership with London Transport Museum to engage community and schools. Working internationally with museums and galleries to bring in different people from the diasporas. Being international about engaging all social classes (colour, creed, and class) to ensure equal involvement from all communities, so that we can better understand what it means to be British.
