Te Maru O Hinemihi was established as a charity in 2024. It objectives are to - a. to seek to increase knowledge and capability in and of the Maori and Pasifika languages, culture and traditions in the UK and Europe b. to seek to bring the Maori and Pasifika diaspora community of the UK, Europe and elsewhere together including by developing partnerships with cultural heritage institutions in UK, Europe, New Zealand and the Pacific c. supporting the development and learning of Maori and Pasifika creative culture in the UK including arts, architecture and crafts, music and dance. In 2024-25 the charities activities benefited the community in the following ways - - hosted a workshop that developed tradition weaving skills among the Maori and Pasifika diaspora community of the UK - hosted Maori carvers from New Zealand who did conservation work on carvings in the care of National Trust. This provided an opportunity for UK conservationist to further develop their knowledge.
The charity developed a short cultural programme with a British Council grant. The grant was received prior to the start of this time period, but was disbursed within it. The grant was used to assist Maori craft experts and respected elders with travel to the UK to share their skills and participate in 2 consultation events. Participants of event 1 came predominantly from the Aotearoa/New Zealand diaspora community for a combined Maori weaving workshop and a community discussion on a proposed new Maori meeting house. Participants were encouraged to provide feedback. This information would be used to assist with the design. The 2nd event was specifically for 2 major and 1 local stakeholders. The Maori crafts experts worked onsite with the technical expert to review the condition of Maori artifacts held in storage. The local stakeholder group participated in a traditional welcoming event. Many had not seen this ceremony before. The sharing of Maori culture gave them an understanding, how significant their role is in our project. This event was considered a success as individuals shared new ideas that could support the work of the charity.
