WELKAIT COMMUNITY SUPPORT CIC

Directors' report period ended 31 January 2025

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 January 2025

Principal activities of the company

WELKAIT COMMUNITY SUPPORT CIC is incorporated as a community interest company limited by guarantee. Our mission is to support the Amhara and Eritrean community in the United Kingdom by promoting integration, personal development, and mutual assistance.

Political and charitable donations

Recognising the ties of our community to their origins, we facilitated donations totalling £7,150 to support initiatives in the Welkait region of Ethiopia: £5,200 in March 2024 (via Manchester Market). £1,950 in September 2024 (via Birmingham New St). These funds were directed toward humanitarian aid, such as community development projects, benefiting displaced or needy individuals in Welkait. This activity strengthens cultural bonds and provides indirect benefits to UK based members by supporting their extended families and heritage.

Additional information

As outlined in our founding community interest statement, our core objectives include: Providing language learning programs in Amharic and English to enhance communication skills and foster inclusivity. Organising cultural integration events and workshops to strengthen community bonds and celebrate diversity. Offering employment assistance, including job search guidance, CV preparation, and skill development to improve employability and economic wellbeing. Assisting with form filling and documentation to ease administrative burdens. Building community networks to create support systems for newcomers and facilitate mutual aid. During the reporting period, we have actively pursued these objectives while expanding our support to address immediate community needs, such as bereavement and humanitarian aid. Our activities have primarily benefited community members in Manchester, Birmingham, and London, where significant Amhara and Eritrean populations reside.

Company activities and impact

1.Funeral Support and Bereavement Services The organisation provided funeral and bereavement support to community members during 2024. In May 2024, funds were disbursed to assist the family of a deceased member with funeral expenses and related costs. Support was provided on a not for profit basis to reduce financial pressure on affected families and to maintain community support structures. 2.Grant Utilisation from the London Borough of Camden In March 2024, the organisation received a grant from the London Borough of Camden. The grant was used to fund bereavement services, including funeral arrangements and family assistance in London. This funding enabled the organisation to provide timely support to vulnerable community members and strengthened cooperation with local authorities. 3.Donations to the Welkait Region in Ethiopia The organisation facilitated donations totalling £7150 in 2024 to support humanitarian initiatives in the Welkait region. £5200 was donated in March 2024 via Manchester Market. £1950 was donated in September 2024 via Birmingham New St. These funds supported community development and humanitarian needs in the region, reflecting the community’s cultural and family connections. 4. Member Contributions and Community Engagement We collected £7,934.78 in member contributions during the financial year. These funds, from over 90 individual contributions, reflect strong community participation and were used to sustain our operations. By involving members directly, we fostered ownership and ensured activities aligned with community needs. Our activities differ from commercial entities in that we operate solely for community benefit, with all surpluses reinvested. For instance, while a for-profit language or employment service might charge fees for personal profit, our programs are free or low-cost, funded by grants and contributions, to maximise accessibility. Impact Measurement Beneficiaries Reached: Approximately 100 to 150 community members across Manchester, Birmingham, and London benefited from our support services, based on contribution records and event participation. Feedback and Outcomes: Informal consultations indicated high satisfaction, with families reporting reduced stress during bereavements and improved confidence in integration efforts. We aim to formalise impact tracking in future periods.

Consultation with stakeholders

Stakeholders include community members, directors, guarantors, and local authorities. Consultation occurred through .Regular informal meetings and feedback sessions with members in Manchester, Birmingham, and London to identify needs. .Engagement with the London Borough of Camden during grant application and reporting, ensuring alignment with local community priorities. .Member contributions and participation in events served as ongoing sources of input. No formal surveys were conducted, but we plan to implement them next year to enhance responsiveness.
