COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

HARROGATE REPAIR CAFE CIC

Company Number: 15992905 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 October 2025

Company activities and impact

The Harrogate Repair Cafe brings together people with the skills, experience and tools to repair broken items on a voluntary basis. The CIC holds monthly sessions in rented premises where visitors bring their broken items for repair. The CIC’s activities provide benefit to the general public in the local community of Harrogate, North Yorkshire and immediate surrounding area. - The community benefits through the positive ecological, social and economic impact delivered by repairing objects that would otherwise be thrown away, thereby reducing landfill; - Visitors are asked to sit with the repairers to observe and sometimes participate in the process to appreciate the practical knowledge being applied to the repairs. In many cases, this hands-on guidance helps attendees learn new practical skills and build confidence for future repairs, moving away from a "throwaway" mindset; - By extending the lifespan of products, a primary objective is to reduce the volume of raw materials and energy needed for manufacturing new goods, thereby cutting CO2 emissions and promoting a circular economy; - The CIC provides a space equipped with various tools and materials that might not be readily available in every household, enabling repairs that would otherwise be difficult; - If an item cannot be repaired, the volunteers explain the reasons and provide advice on alternative solutions, such as where to find specific spare parts or the safest disposal methods. In the financial year 2024-25: - Approximately 550 visitors came to the Harrogate Repair Cafe with their broken household items; - An average of 14 volunteers attended each session; - A total of 602 broken items were presented to the volunteer repairers over 16 sessions; - 342 items were successfully repaired (57%); - Visitors were given advice, asked to source spare parts or partial repairs were undertaken for 161 items (27%); - Only 99 items (16%) were unrepairable, typically because they were totally worn out or spare parts were not available. The Repair Cafe began its activities in June 2024 and the CIC was formally incorporated on 2nd October 2024, therefore the financial year 2024-25 represents 16 months of activity from 1st June 2024 to 31st October 2025. Future financial years will span only 12 months e.g. 1st November 2025 – 31st October 2026.

Consultation with stakeholders

Members of the Public The CIC’s key stakeholders are members of the public from Harrogate, Knaresborough and the surrounding villages. No personal data is held on the visitors except for their names which are only retained for the current session. - On arrival, each visitor is presented with “house rules” that set out the CIC’s expectations, such as the visitor remaining with the volunteer repairer while the repair is being carried out. The visitor must agree to the house rules before information relating to the broken item(s) is logged and a repairer with the appropriate skills and experience is assigned to the repair; - A repairer will advise the visitor on the likelihood of a successful repair, based upon the fault, the ease of disassembly and reassembly, the availability of necessary parts and any specialist tools required. It is ultimately the decision of the owner whether the repair goes ahead; - Visitor feedback is sought at the end of the repair. With the owner’s permission, the successful repair is photographed and posted on to the CIC’s Facebook page to promote its services; - Individuals occasionally raise questions on the CIC’s Facebook page or send an e-mail requesting advice on potential repairs. In the majority of cases, the owners are advised to visit the Cafe in order that a full assessment of the broken item can be undertaken; - We advertise on Facebook, the Nextdoor app, on local community notice boards and through word of mouth to generate interest in local people attending the monthly sessions. We also delivered a couple of talks to community social groups to generate awareness and interest in the CIC. Volunteer Repairers Our volunteer repairers are also key stakeholders. - The directors receive feedback on every successful and unsuccessful repair. The details are recorded and later logged on the Repair Cafe International database. The value of aggregating this information from all active Cafes in all countries offers an insight into the manufacturers who make repair a simple, complex or impossible task. In turn this has assisted in the formation of the “Right to Repair” legislation. - Every session provides the opportunity for repairers to raise ideas and concerns and to offer advice. The directors take these on board and in many cases, the CIC has improved its services as a result. - We have occasionally consulted with the Leeds Repair Cafe for advice on particular aspects of managing the Harrogate Repair Cafe, for example, the introduction of credit card payments. - Likewise Skipton and Ripon Repair Cafes approached the Harrogate Repair Cafe for advice when they were setting up in their towns. - The repairers were invited to the CIC’s Annual General Meeting which was an open forum for ideas and feedback on the way that the Harrogate Repair Cafe is run.
