The company runs Scrap Dragon, a scrapstore/creative reuse centre, providing clean, safe reusable waste materials that would usually be sent to landfill or incineration, to community organisations, schools, families, community artists and others for the purpose of children’s play, creative activities, arts and craft. During the financial year 2024-2025 the scrapstore/creative reuse centre activities have benefited the community in the following ways: Open days -Between August 2024 and July 2025, we were open for a total of 46 days, typically operating one day per week along with one weekend day each month. - During these opening days, we introduced exclusive sessions for Blue Members. As blue members represent groups of 25 or more people, these sessions were designed to better accommodate their need for larger volumes of scrap materials. - We also held blue member only openings in August, with dates communicated directly via email. In total, 13 blue member sessions took place, usually scheduled during the first few hours of opening days - particularly on Saturday mornings, which anecdotal feedback suggested was the most convenient time for these members. Visits - There was a noticeable increase in visitors to ScrapDragon, with queues forming at the start of several open days. On particularly busy days, we limited access to the scrap rooms to 10 people at a time, allowing each group 15 minutes to browse. This measure was introduced to ensure customer safety. - For this reason, among others, we continued to restrict access for children in the scrap rooms. The only exception was for home-educated children, who were permitted entry during open days that took place within school hours during term time. -In total, we had 1194 individual visits, broken down as follows: Individual visits (yellow): 623 Individual visits (green): 210 Individual visits (blue): 361 Breakdown of memberships by type: Artist/Theatre/Workshop 36 Charity/Fundraising 18 Childminder 7 Children & Youth Activities 23 Education (Early Years / Nursery) 53 Education (Primary School) 33 Education (College) 2 Education (University) 3 Family Hub 5 Home Educator 9 SEND 6 Uniformed Group 15 Voluntary/Community/Faith Group (including craft clubs) 43 Personal Use 278 Other 56 Number of people benefitting from the use of scrap - Calculated by asking members upon signing up, how many people will benefit throughout the year from their purchases. Total number of people benefitting from memberships: 19,303 Volunteers - We had 7 volunteers, assisting to run the scrapstore/creative reuse centre, on a rota basis, helping to sort out donations, keeping the scrapstore clean and tidy, assisting members to find what they need. Events -In September 2024, we held a special open day for members of The Furnival, a local community centre. Many of these women do not speak or read English, so hosting a dedicated session with a translator enabled us to clearly explain the membership scheme and how the scrapstore operates. - Throughout the rest of the year, we have seen a steady increase in members of the local community whose first language is not English, often introduced to the shop through friends and family who have helped explain how it works. - In June, we attended the Sheffield Eco-Conference at Dobcroft school and delivered a workshop introducing education providers to using scrap materials in craft, play and learning. We set up a pop-up shop and sold almost 1 tonne of scrap materials. - We also set up a pop-up shop for a networking event at MASKK, in June, alongside Sheffield Play Partnership, where we made contact with a number of trained play workers. -In November, we delivered free seasonal craft workshops to families at The Burton Street Christmas Market. We had a total of 104 participants, and we sold craft and ideas packs made from scrap materials. - In February 2025, we attended Barnsley Early Years Conference with a pop-up scrap shop and sold 1.0 tonne of scrap. Donors - 39 local businesses, manufacturers and commercial organisations have donated suitable waste material and resources to be reused for play, arts and crafts activities - We have also received donations from individuals, on average from 3 people a week, of household donations such as fabric, craft materials and paper. - We estimate the tonnage of materials we have saved from going to landfill or incineration during 2024 - 25 is 7.1 tonnes - this is more than the tonnage from the previous year, and reflects the continued increased demand by our members for resources.
The company’s stakeholders are anyone that lives or works with children and young people in Sheffield and South Yorkshire, and local businesses and manufacturers who donate suitable waste materials and reduce the amount of wastage going to landfill/incineration. All users of the scrapstore/creative reuse centre are required to hold a membership. In January 2024, we introduced three membership tiers: Yellow, Green, and Blue. The membership structure was created to ensure a fair distribution of resources, as we are a small scrapstore with limited capacity. Yellow membership is aimed at individuals and crafters, while Green membership is designed for small, casual groups and childminders, covering groups of up to 25 people, including craft groups. Memberships for Yellow and Green members expired at the end of July 2024 and were renewed when we reopened after a summer break in September 2024. Blue membership is intended for larger groups of 25 or more, such as schools, private nurseries, charities, and adventure playgrounds. As the shop became extremely busy at times, Blue members found it difficult to collect the volume of resources they required without depleting stock for other customers. As we are unable to restock while the shop is open and busy, we introduced Blue membership-only sessions. Feedback and attendance figures indicate that these sessions have been very popular and effective. On all membership forms, we ask members to specify the materials, activities, and crafts they are interested in. This information helps us focus our collections on the most in-demand items. In particular, fabric has proven especially popular among Yellow and Green members, while wood is highly sought after by Blue members. Our website and social media is used to inform members and non-members about what we offer, and what the next open dates are. Members and non-members are able to message us, provide feedback and comments which we take into account for improving our service.
