Year Ending: 31 August 2025

Company activities and impact

In our second year of operation, Smallmatter’s Fitness Focus C.I.C. secured funding from the National Lottery Community Fund, ESC Lottery Fund, and GMBC Funds. These resources have enabled us to continue supporting women who are often excluded from mainstream services due to language barriers, cultural differences, stigma surrounding mental health, and financial hardship Across Gateshead and Newcastle, we have supported approximately 300–500 women through regular wellbeing and fitness sessions. Our work is centred on Reducing isolation Improving mental wellbeing Creating safe, women-only spaces Building confidence and connection We consistently see women who initially arrive withdrawn and isolated gradually begin to engage, form relationships, and participate more confidently. For many, our sessions are the only environment where they feel safe, understood, and supported. During the year, we delivered: Weekly women-only wellbeing and fitness sessions African drumming and rhythm-based group sessions Peer support and informal wellbeing discussions Community engagement through outreach and word of mouth Sessions were delivered in local community venues, including Windmill Hills Centre and Inner West Newcastle locations. We also supported women with: Access to food and refreshments Informal childcare support where possible Signposting to wider services Our fitness programmes also extended to young children and families, promoting healthy eating, physical activity, and positive social engagement. This family-focused approach helped Improve physical fitness Strengthen mental wellbeing Reduce youth idleness and social exclusion Young people participated in a variety of enjoyable and culturally enriching activities. Music played a key role in enhancing engagement, and the introduction of African bongo drumming added a creative and therapeutic dimension. The programme successfully encouraged young people to move away from isolated indoor activities such as excessive gaming and reduced the risk of anti-social behaviour. Instead, they became more active, socially connected, and positively involved in their communities

Consultation with stakeholders

We maintain continuous engagement with our community through weekly conversations during sessions, ensuring that women feel heard, valued, and involved in shaping our work. This includes: Informal feedback and check ins during sessions WhatsApp communication, which allows ongoing support and quick responses Peer discussions, creating a safe space for shared experiences and collective problem solving Feedback is acted on promptly. For example, session times have been adjusted around school schedules, and women only spaces remain a priority based on participant needs. One significant change driven by community feedback was the introduction of African drumming, which has increased engagement, cultural expression, and enjoyment. This responsive approach ensures our work remains relevant, accessible, and community led. Partnerships and Collaborative Working Smallmatter’s Fitness Focus C.I.C continues to strengthen its network by working closely with like minded organisations across the region. These partnerships enhance our reach, diversify our offer, and ensure women and families can access a wider range of support. Our collaborators include: Nur Fitness – supporting the delivery of fitness classes Gateshead Metropolitan Council The Windmill Hills Centre, Gateshead The Community of African Women in Sunderland The Regional Refugee Forum North East Dance City, Newcastle upon Tyne These relationships help us share resources, coordinate community support, and create a more connected ecosystem of services for women and families across Gateshead, Newcastle, and the wider North East.
