Waypoint Maritime CiC is dedicated to promoting and supporting implementation of best practice in mental health and wellbeing in the maritime industry. We understand the unique challenges faced by seafarers and strive to provide the necessary resources and assistance to improve their mental well-being at sea. During this financial year Waypoint Maritime CiC has continued to work on service development, alongside activities to promote best practice in maritime mental health and initiatives that integrate evidence-based mental health practices into the maritime industry. Activities include: Publication of campaigns for mental health awareness and stress management on key dates such as mental health awareness week, international suicide prevention day and stress awareness week. Sharing and promoting best practice in mental health for a maritime audience Presentation at conferences, summits and webinars including Safety4Sea crew welfare week, ACI HR and crew management conference, the International Group of P&I Clubs wellbeing seminar and London International Shipping Week. Features in articles and interviews in the maritime press, including Splash247, IMarEST and Safety4Sea Waypoint Maritime director acted as a judge for crew welfare awards and was shortlisted for an award itself. Development of innovative programmes for crew support, psychosocial and stress risk assessment and specialist training in critical incident support for crew. Waypoint Maritime CiC contributes to the maritime industry’s efforts to promote psychological wellbeing among seafarers. Waypoint Maritime CiC’s activities benefit seafarers by increasing awareness of what works for mental health and psychological wellbeing, building confidence in recognising and responding to distress, and supporting a more open and informed culture around mental health at sea within the industry. We challenge the industry to adopt evidence-based practice to support seafarer wellbeing through the development of practical and accessible mental health resources and design of tailored programmes for mental health promotion, protection and response. We have helped increase awareness, improve confidence in responding to psychological distress, and support a more open dialogue around mental health at sea. As programmes continue to be developed we aim to pilot them within the industry. While formal impact measurement is not yet available, positive feedback and ongoing engagement highlights the relevance and value of this work.
Waypoint Maritime’s stakeholders are people in the maritime community. A small group of ‘critical friends’ has been established of key industry informants, people who have specialist knowledge and a unique perspective on seafarer wellbeing because of their professional role, as seafarers themselves or as those involved directly in maritime organisations, professional advisory bodies, insurance and welfare organisations. Waypoint Maritime engages with these stakeholders in meetings, which informs key priorities for action and programme development. Waypoint maritime also engages informally with wider industry stakeholders through presentations, discussion forums and professional networks to ensure relevance and understanding of priority issues within industry which in turn informs our work. Feedback on publications and presentations is important to the company and allows us to tailor our approach.
