Company activities and impact

Tasty Waste, a Birmingham based social enterprise, has a social mission to sustainably build a stronger and healthier community, enabling local communities to feed themselves on a budget whilst reducing food waste. During the year ending 31 August 2025 funds acquired via the Co-operative Local Community Fund continue to be utilised to address environmental issues, food security, food waste and mental health issues, with a focus on young people. The new site for the gardening club based at a local secondary school has proved to be successful and further seeds and plants have been bought and donated. Competitions have been launched to encourage participation in outdoor activities including a ‘tallest sunflower’ competition for younger students. Herbs continue to be grown and used to garnish dishes to improve GCSE grades Use of the composter for kitchen scraps from food lessons continues and has extended students’ knowledge of environmental issues.

Consultation with stakeholders

Stakeholders include school students. One of the directors has taught at the school for 9 years and understands the need for outdoor learning to address mental health issues and problems around increasing consumption of ultra processed foods. Students have shown an interest over the years in growing their own food and using the produce to make healthier meals. Recent meetings have taken place to recruit volunteers to help run the gardening club and to ensure future growth of the club.
