The Company is a small local led one that helps to run a number of small volunteer led projects in Penicuik alongside other organizations and groups. To make the place a better place to live and improves the wellbeing of the people and the community. Penicuik Guerrilla Gardeners looks after a maintains a number of Local Authority owned plots that they no longer maintain or care for. We receive donations of plants, garden items and the volunteers use them to make the town center and surrounding parts of the town look more pleasing for people and to enhance wildlife, insects and bird. We receive sponsorships/donations annually to then supply the towns annual hanging basket display. This is to make the place a place where people can be proud to walk through and live in. Volunteers help in all aspects of growing, planting and maintaining them. We were able to purchase planters and water bowsers for watering all the plants as well as a shed for storage and Greenhouse for volunteers to grow plants. In order we can be sustainable in the future and not having to purchase plants. This is great for volunteers wellbeing and mental health. It is well supported by locals, organizations and businesses alike and is not for profit other than returning back to the community what ever proceeds may be left. We fund raise through donations received by volunteers for plants they have grown, home baking and such. We also seek grants that are for volunteer groups in order to improve the spaces for all. Any funds left over are used to ensure the continuation of this project and group into the following year with the aim to then grow the project spaces. A small group of local High School Students undertook some sessions litter picking and tidying beds over a number of weeks in the town centre. We supplied free plants to the local volunteer run Broomhill Day Centre which provides a day care service to elderly vulnerable people with dementia. We provided soil, seeds and pots to all the local school and nurseries who grew flowers that were then planted in the town center. We aim for the people volunteering on benefiting from the volunteers work and their wellbeing benefit as the place looks more loved, cared for and gives a sense of pride in the town. We litter pick and recently cleared the local park burn and park spaces. We recycle unused tools and plants as far as possible and re-use as much as we can . There is a good team of local dedicated volunteers in total around 20 who help throughout the year and summer season. With a focus in participation, inclusion and wellbeing. The group also supported the creation of a memorial to 11 local women who lost their lives during the Scottish Witch Hunts. We hosted a play in the town hall called ‘The Devils Mark’ and the even was organized and supported on the night by local volunteers. We are not for profit and what we receive goes back out to the community for the community and community benefit.
