Company activities and impact

Girls Into Coding (GIC) our program creates opportunities for community development, collaboration, and connectedness for girls from diverse backgrounds by creating and delivering hands-on Tech activities such as robotics, physical computing, coding, engineering, 3D design & printing workshops in-person and online. Our GIC program improves mental health by re-establishing connectedness, builds /repairs, confidence, builds resilience, presents opportunities and the support to surmount challenges, helping young people to believe in their abilities and the potential to re-join and flourish in their communities. Our sessions provide information, advice, opportunities, skills, and support on youth-related issues such as gender inequality, isolation, developing personal confidence, anti-stereotyping, gender bias, resilience, and healthy and supportive networks. As well as this, the project brings the girls together to engage in enrichment and purposeful tech activities allowing them to develop their digital and making skills and fill gaps in their social and skills development by connecting them to a wider network of people at the events and beyond. We have designed workshops to help address the gender gap in STEM and to sustain girls’ interest, initially so they continue pursuing STEM activities and ultimately, so they are engaged to consider STEM education and careers. We have reached 8000 girls through hands-on opportunities to explore tech & engineering, tech talks, and inspirational content and resources. We are enabling the girls to: - See their potential - Develop a sense of belonging in tech settings - Become more aware of women & girls doing cool things in Tech and STEM - Experience the awe and wonder of being guided to successfully complete a range of hands-on projects - for example, building, wiring up, programming and debugging a robot and then witness it spring into action as a result of their efforts - Be empowered to pursue further tech opportunities and to consider STEM education & careers

Consultation with stakeholders

The stakeholders of Girls Into Coding (GIC) are parents and their daughters GIC Community Voice is a diverse group of young people involved in shaping the direction, content, development, and delivery of the GIC programme. This includes workshop formats and themes, kits and resources, and even testing aspects to influence design decisions. Be-cause of this, the Community Voice directly impacts decisions within our organisation. Our girls are empowered to be the core of our group, and we encourage a culture of belief that they’re never too young for their voices to be valued. After each event, GIC send a survey to the parents to collect feedback about the event, what they liked, what additional services they would like GIC to offer, how they rate the event. The survey aims to measure the following metrics: Improved confidence Level of engagement Knowledge Awareness The director organises a brainstorming session after each event with the workshop facilitators/mentors The mentors share insights, what has worked what has not worked with each other, or any tips on how to increase children participation during the session.
