Sahara Family Advice is a service for all families, created in response to the urgent need for professional guidance, support, and advocacy for families whose children have been taken into care. Sahara Family Advice promotes a multi-agency approach, working closely with social workers, school staff, and health professionals to achieve the best possible outcomes for families and their children. Families often feel isolated and unsupported when their children are taken into care. In many cases, their only source of independent support is through solicitors, who can be expensive and, at times, unreliable. Although Social Services provide support, families may find it difficult to work with the same professionals involved in the decision to remove their children. In addition, Social Services are often overstretched and under-resourced. Sahara Family Advice provides support with: Understanding care processes and procedures Comprehending why a child has been taken into care Understanding how assessments are carried out Guidance on building evidence to support the family’s case Tailored training delivered by qualified social workers Maintaining contact with children Providing support during important professional meetings Encouraging family involvement in decision-making Helping families understand what is expected of them and why Explaining the options available to families Signposting to relevant specialist support agencies Raising awareness of families’ rights Home visits to provide direct family support Research indicates that the number of children in care has increased by 28% over the past decade. Sahara Family Advice aims to reduce the number of children who remain in the care system by providing the support outlined above. This work could also bring significant financial benefits to local authorities, which spend millions of pounds each year supporting children in care, while freeing up more resources to support wider public services.
