This financial year, The Birth Republic has supported 23 parents across 75 sessions (112.5 hours of therapeutic support by five perinatal specialist therapists. The support we offer is a brief intervention therapy utilising hypnosis, meditation, mindfulness and psychoeducation to help parents manage symptoms that arose from a traumatic perinatal (conception to 2 years postpartum) event, perinatal anxiety, and low mood. The support we have provided has helped our community of parents to bond with their children, improve their emotional and mental wellbeing, advocate for themselves and their children in healthcare settings, improve their close relationships and helped them have the confidence to engage with other local support. Our impact is growing as is awareness of our service. We have people refer to our services from other perinatal charities, specialist Health Visitors, other perinatal professionals and word of mouth from parents themselves. The following is from a 5 star Google review indicative of the feedback we receive: "What an incredible and much needed service. It's free which is hugely helpful whilst juggling new baby costs on very limited maternity pay. Alex was amazing and helped me process my birth experience and the anxiety and stress I experienced after it, whilst also giving me coping mechanisms for when it gets tough. I feel like I'm a much happier and relaxed parent now, ready to continue on this rollercoaster of a journey called motherhood."
The company's stakeholders are parents during the perinatal stage (conception to two years postpartum) and the therapists we work with to support them. For the parents we support, we introduced an exit survey which is sent out to parents after their last session. To date we've had 19 responses, with 100% of responders considering our work 'absolutely vital', helped them feel more confident in their parenting, 17/19 feeling more connected to those close to them, 18/19 feeling more confident in accessing other forms of community support and 19/19 stating that the support they received from The Birth Republic has had a significant positive impact on their mental and emotional wellbeing. One piece of feedback we received was to have a follow up session a month or so after the last session to check in, and this is something we now offer to parents we've supported. For the therapists, we now offer monthly supervision and support sessions to ensure best practice and offer support to therapists who work with us. This also provides a forum to take on feedback around the support they need and the service we offer from their point of view.
