Broad Bikez CIC promotes inclusion and intersectionality within the cycling and bike mechanic industry by providing bike maintenance education led by women and LGBTQ+ mechanics. Our work aims to make cycling and bike repair spaces safer, more welcoming and more accessible for women, queer, trans and BIPOC communities, who are often underrepresented in traditional bike mechanic environments. Activities delivered between August 2024 – September 2025 - 15 Basics of Bike Maintenance workshops - 6 Roadside Emergency Repair workshops - 2 Introduction to Gear Indexing workshops - Supported over 80 participants to improve bike maintenance skills and confidence. - Hosted a zine launch in partnership with Zurnal Zine - Expanded collaborations with community cycling groups including Queer on Wheels, Black Women on Wheels and Women of Colour Cycling Collective. - Doubled our Instagram following and increased community engagement Grants and funding received - Received a £2,500 “Share the Joy” grant from London Cycling Campaign o Funded a free place for a trans participant at every class o Supported fair pay for mechanics delivering workshops Community impact Our activities helped participants: - Build confidence in maintaining and repairing their bikes - Gain practical cycling knowledge and independence - Feel more comfortable accessing bike mechanic services - Connect with inclusive cycling communities - Experience the wellbeing and social benefits of cycling in safer community-led spaces
Our primary stakeholders are women, non-binary people, queer cycling groups and the wider LGBTQ+ community in London, particularly in East London where most of our activities take place. We also welcome the wider community and have run activities for families and children. How we consulted stakeholders - Feedback questionnaires sent to all bike maintenance workshop attendees - Informal conversations after classes and during workshop sessions - Instagram polls and questions asking the community what they would like to learn Feedback received Stakeholders shared feedback on: - Skills taught during workshops - What worked well and what could be improved - Whether the learning environment felt safe and comfortable - Interest in more creative and social cycling activities Actions taken in response - Continued improving workshop delivery based on participant feedback - Expanded collaborations with community cycling groups - Began developing new community-focused workshops, including bike decorating (“bike bedazzling”) and social gatherings - Planned to launch these new activities from Summer 2026 to create more accessible and engaging entry points into cycling and bike maintenance communities
